Job Summary:

Omar D. Blair is currently seeking a K-2 Autism Center Teacher. The* K-2 Autism Center Teacher* is responsible for a self-contained classroom for students whose educational needs center on development of functional academics and adaptive behavior skills. The K-2 Autism Teacher works alongside MI-A Paraprofessional(s) to instruct scholars who have been identified with “Autism” to meet the social, emotional and academic needs of scholars in the center. Responsibilities include providing instruction to scholars based on individual goals through push in and small groups as well as one-on-one, with practice opportunities, re-teaching, and monitoring behavior.

Required Qualifications:

  • Valid Colorado Teaching License
  • Master’s degree in Special Education
  • Passed Praxis or License in Special Education
  • Desire to teach in an urban public or charter school setting
  • Must be able to work flexible hours to meet the needs of students
  • Experience working with special education students diagnosed with Autism preferred

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Emphasize skill development in basic skills, concepts, recreation, leisure, community, vocational and domestic by infusing motor, communication and social skills
  • Assess and develop inclusive settings to support educational, behavioral, social-emotional, physical, daily living needs of students in school and community
  • Select and use a variety of instructional strategies and techniques that meet the needs of scholars’ goals
  • Direct, supervise and collaborate with paraprofessional staff, if assigned to the classroom
  • Develops and executes individualized lesson plans in all subject areas providing for direct instruction while maintaining a focus on district standards and benchmarks.
  • Administers and interprets both formal and informal individualized educational assessments; develops and maintains IEPs for all identified students.
  • Counsel students to encourage and support student achievement.
  • Monitor, supervise, coordinate and enforce rule of conduct and behavior assigned students; and reinforces positive student behaviors in accordance with school and District policy.
  • Observe, evaluate, report and record students' performance, behavior, social development, and physical health.
  • Use Functional Behavior Assessment data to create and run Behavior Intervention Plans for scholars who need additional behavior support.
  • Prepare lesson plans and materials according to curriculum guidelines.
  • Adapt teaching methods and instructional materials to meet students' varying needs and interests.
  • Instruct students individually and in groups, using various teaching methods (e.g., lectures, technology, discussions)
  • Establish and communicate clear objectives for lessons, units, and projects to students.
  • Prepare, administer, assign and grade tests and assignments to evaluate student progress, reporting grades using District software
  • Prepare student, attendance and activity reports as required by administrators.
  • Communicate with parents or guardians, teachers, counselors, and administrators to resolve students' behavioral and academic problems
  • Lift and transport students using appropriate equipment and lifting techniques (as needed)
  • Meet the duties, physical and mental demands described in this description as representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of the job
  • Collaborate with other SPED, general education and DPS providers to create IEPs and deliver special education services to scholars
  • Perform other duties as assigned

  • Working knowledge of proactive communication with colleagues about scholar needs to ensure integrated support
