Junior Volunteer Job at Kern County Hospital Authority
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Junior Volunteer at Kern Medical Center! Your service is greatly appreciated by our staff, patients, and their families. The program’s primary goal is to teach the value of community service in a healthcare setting. Junior responsibilities include working in the gift shop, the snack bar, information desk and assisting in various
departments and clinics.
Dependability, maturity, honesty and professionalism are important qualities we look for in a Junior Volunteer. Please understand that we have a limited number of volunteer opportunities and we cannot guarantee every applicant a spot. Volunteer opportunities and responsibilities will be discussed during the volunteer interview.
Your first uniform is free, and a $5.00 membership fee is due at orientation. You are required to wear white or navy-blue pants or scrubs with rubber-sole shoes. No shorts, jeans or open toed shoes are allowed on volunteer shifts. Attire must adhere to the Dress Code & Grooming Policy, please see attached.
This program will offer you the opportunity to become acquainted with the many career possibilities in healthcare, to learn the essentials of commitment and responsibility, and to serve others in a meaningful way.
Participants will be considered for a scholarship opportunity through the Homegrown Health Program contingent upon grant funding, please see below.
Two students will be eligible for additional scholarship monies through the Volunteer Essay Scholarship Contest
To be eligible for the Junior Volunteer Program students must:
1. 15 – 17 years of age
2. Be a full-time student in the 9th through 12th grade.
3. Have received at least a “C” in all classes.
4. Complete interview with the Volunteer Services Manager & Kern Medical Foundation Staff
5. Submit application packet with all the requested attachments.
6. Complete lab requirements for health screening.
7. Attend Hospital Orientation when scheduled
8. Be available to volunteer at least once a week for a 5-hour shift.
9. Volunteer a minimum of 54 hours within the 10-week session
- Junior Volunteer Application
- Authorization for Consent to Treatment of a Minor Form (with parent/guardian signature)
- Personal Reference Form
- Copy of most recent Report Card (No progress reports)
- Copy of School Immunization Record (Available from your school)
- A small photograph of yourself (only you, no group photos)

Health Professions Pathways Program Grant
The Kern Medical Foundation is working together with the Department of Health Care Access and Information to increase the number of underrepresented individuals in health professions training and working in health careers in the State of California.
The purpose of the Grant is to provide services to recruit and support students from underrepresented regions and backgrounds to pursue health careers by developing and implementing health professions pathways programs.
