Summary: The Junior Pollution Abatement and Freshwater Systems Engineer, under oversight, direction and guidance from Senior degreed Engineers, will provide full-time onsite engineering and technical support for the systems, subsystems and equipment contained in the Duties and Responsibilities section.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provide engineering support for the following systems: Oil Pollution Abatement (OPA), Oil Waste Separators (OWS), Oil Content Monitors (OCM), Reverse Osmosis (RO) Distilling Plant, Sewage Collection, Holding and Transfer (CHT), Sewage Vacuum Collection, Holding and Transfer (VCHT), Evaporative toilet system (e.g. GATX), Potable Water system, Electric Cooling Water (ECW), Shredders, Plastic Waste Processor (PWP), Metal/Glass Shredder (MGS), Large and Small Waste Pulpers.
  • Be able to interpret, select, adopt, and apply engineering guidelines, principles, and practices to solve technical problems.
  • Conduct engineering investigations and analyses of system failures.
  • Recommend corrective repair actions using root cause analysis.
  • Respond to engineering service requests (ESR).
  • Provide Departure from Specification investigation and adjudication support.
  • Recommend alternative engineering solutions to repeated equipment failures.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related STEM major.
  • Zero to two (2) years general experience with the installation, operation, repair, testing and maintenance of naval pollution abatement systems.
  • Experience in the assessment, repair, and maintenance of structure and coating systems on US Naval ships.
  • Hands-on experience with this equipment in the last two years.
  • Demonstrate a working knowledge of Navy assessment programs, inspections, visit processes and reporting methods for visits.
  • Ability to utilize computers including the Microsoft Office Suite for compiling information for reports and history files and transfer digital pictures from camera to computer and enhance as required and label them for report purposes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and orally.
  • Pursuant to the various government contractual requirements, all applicants must be U.S. Citizens.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain an active SECRET clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous Navy or private/public shipyard experience.

  • Requires walking, reaching, sitting and concentration in the presence of occasional noise.
  • Ability to move in narrow and restricted passageways, up/down steep and narrow ladders or stairways (onboard ships).
  • May ride ships at sea for extended periods.
  • Ability to lift, carry and move objects up to 50 lbs. in weight.
  • Ability to quickly move your hand, your hand together with your arm, or your two hands to grasp.
  • Ability to stand, stoop, bend, kneel, and work in tiring and uncomfortable positions.
  • Ability to wear a respirator.
  • Frequently lifts, carries and helps setup tools, equipment, and parts that weigh up to 50 lbs.
  • May be required to onboard ships to inspect Tanks, Voids and Spaces.
