JOB SUMMARY

Conducts Pretrial Services booking interviews and makes screening release or hold decisions. Develops recommendations and makes referrals to facilitate Pretrial release in cases exceeding Pretrial Services release authority.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university in Sociology, Psychology, Criminal Justice, or other closely related field; OR an equivalent combination of related education and experience.

Must be a US Citizen to work in the County Jail.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required pre-employment background check.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Meets with arrestees and performs interview and background research for screenings. Records in the criminal justice system concerning defendants booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Center. Informs the defendant of their release options and court status.
• Verifies defendant’s self-reported information by contacting the associates and family of the defendant. Acts as a source of information for family members of arrestees.
• Assesses defendant’s screening information and appropriate consultations to determine release eligibility and type of release.
• Assesses and identifies alcohol, drug, mental health, medical, or other problems in order to make the appropriate recommendations. Facilitates court attendance and compliance with Pretrial release conditions, along with referrals for substance abuse or psychological evaluations to determine flight or danger risk.
• Communicates recommendations to judges and/or Court Screeners either favoring or opposing Pretrial release, along with recommended release conditions.
• Assists Court Screeners in preparation for a defendant’s court appearance by ensuring recorded screening information is current and accurate with any additional notes related to assisting in making a release decision.
• Records and transmits necessary information to the Pretrial Supervision Unit and to the ADC Court Liaison regarding client releases.
• Interacts with law enforcement, attorneys, jail personnel, and court personnel regarding defendant’s release status in keeping with confidentiality guidelines.
• Facilitates Pretrial releases and communicates release conditions to the defendant by issuing them a Pretrial release agreement and forwards a copy to the Pretrial Supervision Unit.
• Responds to communications from defendants held in custody, their family and associates, with updates recording new information recorded in C-track.
• Assists Jail staff with questions regarding release status of prisoners and communicates information regarding pending releases with Screener.
• May authorize and supervise shift coverage and designate shift tasks dependent on volume of interviews and workload.
• Reviews interview release decisions and determines if denied and pending status clients require additional actions.
• Conducts proficiency reviews with Screeners in assigned workgroup.
• Completes Pretrial C-track records and necessary Pretrial surrender documentation. Responds to communications from defendants in custody, their family, and associates, and updates new information in C-track.
• Speaks with individuals being released from the Jail pending Salt Lake District Court cases; assings ECR court dates and explains ECR case tracking.
