SUMMARY

Hennepin Healthcare has a current opening for a Pashto/Dari Interpreter. This casual position will pick up day shifts. Provides spoken language interpreter services in a variety of settings to facilitate communication between Limited English Proficient (LEP) patients and companions and Hennepin Health System providers or other staff.

RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Facilitates communication between LEP patients and companions and providers or other staff either face-to-face or via a remote modality such as telephone or video
  • Provides non-complex, document translation services between English and a foreign language
  • Shares relevant cultural information with all parties involved and assists all speakers in reaching a mutual understanding
  • Documents and bills interpreter services provided
  • Effectively communicates departmental, organizational, and industry information to staff
  • Maintains basic computer skills in order to complete job functions using a variety of software and hardware
  • Participates in training new staff and in-service training for existing staff as needed
  • Supports departmental and organizational initiatives around language access by acting as an ambassador and providing information and additional training as requested
  • Assists with scheduling and coordination of deployment of interpreter services
  • Performs other related tasks as required in working with a specific patient population

QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum Qualifications:
  • High School diploma, GED or equivalent
  • Six months of approved experience in providing language interpretive services in the relevant line of business
  • Successful score of Advanced-Mid or higher on the Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) performed by the American Council on the Teaching of Foreign language (ACTFL) , National certification by the Certification Commission for Healthcare Interpreters (CCHI) -OR- National Certification by the National board of Certification for Medical Interpreters
  • Interpreters employed by HCMC prior to October 1, 2009 are considered qualified as long as they have an approved equivalent combination of education and experience and/or have passed the proficiency exam or national certification as detailed below

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certificate in Healthcare Interpreting from the University of Minnesota
  • Associates Degree or Certificate in Translation and Interpreting from Century College
  • 40 hour interpreter skills based training such as Bridging the Gap
-OR-
  • The Community Interpreter Equivalent program or degree

Knowledge/ Skills/ Abilities:
  • Highly proficient with medical terminology in both the target and source languages
  • Knowledge of the National Code of Ethics for Interpreters in Health Care and Standards of Practice developed by the National Council on Interpreting in Health Care (NCIHC), attained by either formal training or independent study
