Shawnee Health is seeking an Interpreter/Outreach Worker for our Shawnee Health Murphysboro office. This position reports directly to the Farmworker Health Program Coordinator
Responsibilities
- Represents Shawnee Health in the most positive manner with prospective, former and current patients, clients, their families and the community we serve.
- Upholds Shawnee Health Service mission by assessing and serving the needs of the underserved/vulnerable populations through the provision of culturally and linguistically appropriate services.
- Provides outreach services to migrant and seasonal farm workers
- Provides Medical Interpretation (Spanish)
- Identify patients’ high risk factors and social determinants of health
- Links patients to appropriate services in the Shawnee Health Service network
- Serves as a patient advocate in seeking resources or services for which the patient may be eligible.
- In accordance with confidentiality of patient information policies, communicates with external resources or agencies for the purpose of care coordination.
- Provides basic health education and promotes health prevention.
- Assist patients with the completion of the Shawnee Financial assistance application
- Provides assistance with SIH Financial Assistance application
- Travels from the home site to other Shawnee locations as needed
- Provides transportation to migrant and seasonal farm workers
- Provides medical interpretation via phone through the after-hour medical interpreting program
- Performs regular checks of program vehicles responsibly as assigned by program supervisor
- Assist program coordinator with other duties as assigned
Requirements
- High school diploma is required. Associate degree in health and social services preferred
- Training and experience in Medical Interpreting as “Bridging the Gap” preferred
- Superior to Advanced level of proficiency and fluency in English and Spanish required
- Excellent interpersonal communication and writing skills required
- Good working knowledge of MSWord and Excel
- A pre-employment test in language proficiency, fluency and computer skills required before hire.
- Flexibility to work out of regular office hours, including occasional weekends
- Position requires sitting for prolonged periods of time, frequent walking and standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, twisting and stretching.
- Requires occasional lifting and carrying of up to 40 pounds.
- Must be able to perform data entry for extended periods of time.
- Driving is required to perform work-related tasks or to attend trainings/workshops or to assist patients at other Shawnee Health locations.
- Works in uncontrolled weather conditions (high temperature during farmworker season) in addition to Climate-controlled medical office environment.
- Since travel will be required, reliable transportation on the job is a necessity.
- Must wear safety gear provided by company during ice/snow events (Yak Trax or similar safety equipment provided by Shawnee).
- Must utilize safety equipment provided by company including moving carts to move tables, large/heavy items to load and unload vehicles for outreach events.

COVID-19
vaccination is a mandatory condition of employment. Absent an approved exemption/accommodation, all employees must be fully vaccinated by receiving both doses of a two-dose vaccine series (Pfizer or Moderna) or one dose of the single-dose vaccine (Janssen) at least fourteen (14) days prior to or on their first day of work. If not already vaccinated, new hires cannot begin work until they: (1) are fourteen (14) days post one dose of the single-dose vaccine (Janssen); (2) are fourteen (14) days post second dose of a two-dose vaccine series (Pfizer or Moderna); or (3) receive an approved exemption/accommodation. Employees who refuse COVID-19 vaccination in accordance with this mandate absent an approved exemption/accommodation will be considered to have voluntarily resigned from employment or, if an individual has not yet started employment, their offer of employment will be withdrawn. Shawnee Health Service reserves the right to not offer employment to unvaccinated individuals if staffing needs cannot accommodate a delayed start date.
