JOB SUMMARY:
The Institutional Giving Officer works directly with the Vice President of External Engagement and Development to lead fundraising activities directed at corporate, foundation, and government sources. Along with the VP and Museum leadership, the Institutional Giving Officer plays a key role in developing and implementing CHM’s major gift fundraising strategy. They collaborate with all CHM departments to identify special project funding needs, produce funder communication materials, and report on departmental activities. They work with the development team to meet or exceed budgeted contributed revenue from institutional sources for the annual fund. The Institutional Giving Officer works to a high standard of stewardship through engaging with funding partners. This includes maintaining accurate records of funder interactions and communications and familiarizing themselves with each funder’s interests, requirements, and history with CHM. They develop a deep and broad understanding of museum-wide goals and activities to present accurate and compelling cases to funders.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
Fundraising Strategy and Leadership
Work directly with the president and vice president of external engagement and development on major gifts for the Museum
Oversee and manage institutional fundraising efforts for all exhibitions/special projects
Collaborate with cross-departmental planning teams to conceptualize grant scopes and activity to ensure that institutional funding is incorporated into complex initiatives
Develop project-specific fundraising plans for upcoming exhibitions, capital projects, collections initiatives, and education programs; advise on corporate and foundation interests/priorities; and deliver status updates on projects already underway (e.g. Broadening Narratives)
Lead quarterly exhibition fundraising strategy meetings with museum leadership and ensure effective documentation and follow-up
Participate in meetings with CHM leadership, as needed, to understand and contribute to the strategic direction and operations of the museum
Work with the development team to create annual operations plans to meet revenue goals, taking the lead on strategies and activities related to institutional donors
Attend meetings of the Board of Trustees Development Committee, reporting on status of fundraising goals when requested
Institutional Donor Relations
Research corporate, foundation, and government grant prospects
Maintain a robust grants calendar with deadlines for LOIs, proposals, and reports
Serve as the Museum’s leading representative to grant funders: cultivate ongoing relationships with institutional funding partners through regular written communications, calls, meetings, site visits, and attendance at external events
Record and track interactions with funders in the Altru database
Manage grant processes, including writing, editing, packaging, and submitting proposals
Ensure high-quality proposal content through subject matter research, writing that is clear and compelling, and a collaborative internal proposal review process
Compile and/or develop all proposal attachments, including grant budgets that align with proposed project activity
Execute grant agreements and manage reporting activities for funded grants
Work with the communications, exhibitions, and curatorial teams to deliver on brand-building and engagement benefits that accompany grants and sponsorships as appropriate
Annual Fund
Work with the Director of Development and the development team to set and track annual fundraising goals for museum operations
Provide the development team regular updates on museum projects and priorities
Advise on strategies for family foundations and develop proposals and reports for select annual fund donors
Support fundraising for CHM’s annual Making History Awards events, including attendance at planning meetings and sponsorship solicitation and follow-up
Contribute to the development department’s semi-annual newsletter, As It Happens
OTHER DUTIES:
Serve on CHM staff committees as needed
Other duties as assigned

WORKING RELATIONSHIPS:
This position requires an individual able to maintain professional and productive working relationships with corporate, foundation, and government donors; CHM staff, CHM senior management, CHM Trustees, and advisory committee members.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree required
7-10 years of grant writing experience required
Experience in research: ability to gather information from a variety of sources
Superior written and interpersonal communications skills required
Proficiency in Microsoft Office required: Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
Proven ability to work as a team player
Proven ability to anticipate and meet deadlines and details
Ability to problem solve creatively and effectively
Willingness to learn; openness to new ideas and people
Strong attention to detail
Exceptional ability to synthesize complex information into concise, compelling prose
