The Inmate Security Officer at the Pennington County Jail serves multiple posts throughout the work week to include: providing security in inmate housing areas and facilitating the safe and orderly distribution of authorized items to inmates.

This position is staffed daily between 10pm and 7am.

• Performing security rounds during scheduled and unscheduled times. Using discretion to determine violations, unusual situations, and directing the appropriate response.
• Initiating and monitoring inmate movement.
• Attending to the needs of inmates in assigned areas to including responding to inmate inquires as directed.
• Distributing authorized items to inmates.
• Being alert and prepared to respond with force in an emergent situation, and to aid others as outlined in policy.
• understanding and enforcement of the Prison Rape Elimination Act Federal Standards.
• Using discretion in responding to inmate requests
• Responding to emergencies, including medical emergencies.
• Responding to inmate mental health behaviors to include determining risk factors for mental health intervention or implementing suicide precautions.
• Documenting incidents, movement, rounds and inmate discipline.
• Performing person, property, and facility searches.
• Facility inmate movement as directed.
• Operate department computer program; dictate and/or type reports
• Assisting with cell block operational tasks as needed

• High School Diploma or GED
• At least 20 years of age
• Preference will be given to those with military, public safety and/or security experience.
• Ability to pass a comprehensive background check and pre-employment drug screen.
