The Information Technology Technician (IT Tech) installs, configures, maintains, troubleshoots repairs, and upgrades computer hardware, software, and related peripheral equipment. The incumbent assists with the configuration and connection of computers to the Local Area Network/Wide Area Network (LAN/WAN networks), electronic email systems. The IT Tech assesses user training needs and trains operators in effective use of computers and related applications; makes recommendations regarding hardware and software acquisitions; prepares documentation and provides assistance to operator community, and performs related work required.


Examples of Work Performed:

  • Install, configure, and upgrade operating systems and software, using standard business and financial applications; may modify specific applications for use in varying departments.
  • Install, assemble and configure: computers, monitors, network infrastructure, and peripherals such as printers, scanners, and related hardware; pull network cables and rewires or redirects the wiring of cables as required for new installation and office configurations.
  • Install and configure computers to connect to LAN/WAN networks using common networking protocols such as TCP/IP.
  • Troubleshoot problems with computer systems, including troubleshooting hardware and software, e-mail, network, and peripheral equipment problems making repairs and corrections where required.
  • Act as technical resource in assisting users to resolve problems with equipment and data; on occasion assists users over the phone with troubleshooting or gathering information to resolve computer issues, implements solutions and assists with notification to outside vendors when and where required.
  • Make hardware and software acquisition recommendations including helping users assess needs and providing justification for equipment and services.
  • Assist in instructing users in the basic use of standard software packages including word processing, spreadsheets, and database management; provides instruction or written documentation where required.
  • Assists with the planning, design, research and acquisition of new or upgraded hardware and software systems; reviews trade journals to maintain current knowledge of hardware, software, and networking technologies and may recommend modifications as necessary.
  • May be assigned new projects and tasks not included in the job description, or to assist other staff as requested by supervisor, ensuring the efficiency and effective function of the work unit.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of computer hardware, software and peripherals such as central processing units, servers, monitors, cables, ups systems, network systems, printers and modems.
  • Knowledge of the functions, operations and technologies related to standard software packages (i.e. Microsoft Office Professional Suites, anti-virus, adware, spyware software).
  • Knowledge of current technologies related to current applications, networks and telecommunications and the equipment and software required to maximize system use and support.
  • Knowledge of procedures for installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting and repairing applicable software, hardware and peripherals.
  • Knowledge of principles, concepts and fundamentals of establishing computer communication with LAN's and WAN's.
  • Ability to explain technical concepts and procedures to non-technical users as well as explaining basic instructions to users on new or upgraded computer applications and hardware.
  • Ability to install, configure and upgrade operating systems and software, using current standard operating systems.
  • Ability to install, configure, assemble and repair computers, monitors, network infrastructure and peripherals such as printers and related hardware.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and solve hardware and software problems.
  • Ability to remain flexible to changes in assignments or situations, priorities and handle frequent interruptions.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other department staff, supervisors/managers, elected officials, and the public.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex projects and tasks with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, with all levels of personnel including employees, supervisors, elected officials, etc.
  • Ability to demonstrate a high degree of personal integrity and be able to maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Ability to work independently and productively with minimum supervision.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Minimum of an Associates' Degree in Computer Science and A+ Certification or the ability to obtain one, or a Cisco certification (i.e. CCNA), and at least (2) years of recent related experience in personal computer systems installation and support.
  • A combination of education and experience that demonstrated the ability of successfully perform the position may substitute.
  • Must comply with the Washington State Patrol background check. This extensive background check requires fingerprinting for state and federal criminal background records. The background search will include, but is not limited to arrests, criminal charges, criminal convictions, and any information regarding contact with a criminal justice agency.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Required to maintain basic first aid and CPR card current.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

PRE-EMPLOYMENT DRUG TEST
: Is required for Pre-Employment with the Yakama Nation. During employment, tribal employees are also subject to random testing (YN Personnel Policy Manual, Chapter 2.9.6, Section (a), (g), Alcohol and Drug-Free Workplace Policy).


TRAINEE
: The Yakama Nation reserves the right to practice Indian Preference by selecting an Indian applicant as a trainee at a reduced pay rate than announced. A training plan is developed to assist employee to reach required qualification requirements and performance level. After completing training plan, work performance will be evaluated. Upon satisfying qualification requirements, employee will obtain entry level pay.


INDIAN PREFERENCE
: In efforts to practice Self-Determination, the Yakama Nation grants Indian Preference for employment, promotions, and transfers to its employees and qualified applicants as appropriate. This may limit career opportunities for non-Indian applicants and candidates.


Preference for employment will be granted to qualified individuals meeting minimal qualification criteria in the following order pursuant to the YN Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.3:

  • 10-points= Enrolled member of Yakama Nation.
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 6-points= Other Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).
  • 8-points= Indian (enrolled) descendant of enrolled Yakama member.
  • 2-points= Non-Indian spouse of an enrolled Yakama member.
  • 0-points= Non-Indian.

Personnel Policy Manual Section 2.1.4:

  • Positions funded under non-638 federal funding: 8-points= Indian (member of a federally recognized tribe).


VETERAN PREFERENCE
: Is pursuant to Section 402 of the Vietnam Era Veteran's Readjustment Assistance Act of 1974. For verification, must provide a copy of honorable DD-214.

Application points using the weighted point factor system: Disabled Veterans receive 10 points; All other Veteran's receive 5 points.
