Industrial Maintenance Mechanic
Roanoke Cement – Norfolk Terminal
Scope of Position:
We are looking for a skilled and motivated Industrial Maintenance Mechanic for our Norfolk terminal facility. This hourly position will report directly to the Assistant Terminal Manager. In this role you will be responsible for maintenance and troubleshooting of various mechanical equipment and systems used in the cement terminal operations. Your primary goal will be to ensure the efficient and reliable operation of machinery to support the production and distribution of cement products. You will work as part of a team and may be required to collaborate with other departments to resolve equipment issues and minimize downtime.
Job Responsibilities:
- Safety: Demonstrate a commitment to communicating, improving, and adhering to all safety policies rules and regulations (Titan & OSHA). Participate in required safety trainings and meetings.
Communicate well with all terminal personnel; be a team player. Perform all required safety checks and follow all safety rules and regulations (Titan & OSHA).
- Equipment Maintenance: Perform routine maintenance and inspections on mechanical equipment such as conveyor systems, bucket elevators, screw conveyors, dust collectors, compressors, pumps, motors, and other related machinery used in cement handling and distribution. This includes lubrication, adjustment, replacement of worn parts, and cleaning to ensure optimal performance.
- Troubleshooting and Repairs: Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical problems, identify root causes, and implement effective repair solutions. This may involve examining equipment components, using testing and diagnostic tools, and coordinating with the terminal operations team to address complex issues.
- Preventive Maintenance: Develop and implement preventive maintenance schedules and procedures to minimize equipment breakdowns and optimize machinery performance. Carry out planned maintenance tasks, such as equipment inspections, parts replacement, and calibration, as per the maintenance plan.
Grease lubrication points throughout the plant on a regular basis and as directed. Perform preventative maintenance inspections on fixed and mobile equipment.
- Equipment Installation and Upgrades: Assist in the installation, modification, and upgrading of equipment and systems as needed. This may involve assembling components, aligning and adjusting parts, and ensuring proper functionality and safety standards.
- Documentation and Reporting: Maintain accurate records of maintenance activities, including work orders, equipment logs, and inventory management. Report equipment performance, repairs, and maintenance needs to supervisors or maintenance management as required.
- Collaboration and Communication: Coordinate and collaborate with other team members, including operators, supervisors, and engineers, to address equipment issues and provide technical support.
Communicate effectively with the team to ensure smooth operations and timely resolution of maintenance-related concerns.
- Maintain records of work performed to assist in tracking equipment history.
- Maintain exterior, interior shop and work area cleanliness.
- Operate hand-help radio according to company policy and FCC regulations.
- May assist with truck, railcar & ship loading and unloading as necessary.
- May be scheduled to work nights and weekends.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional technical certifications or vocational training in mechanical maintenance is a plus.
- Maintain a current Virginia Driver’s License and a clean Motor Vehicle Record.
- Ability to obtain and maintain a TWIC card
- At least 2-3 years proven experience in industrial maintenance as an industrial maintenance mechanic or similar role, preferably in a cement or heavy industrial environment.
- Proficiency in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and repairing mechanical failures.
- Flexibility to work rotating shifts, weekends, and overtime as required.
- Physical job requirements include working outdoors with exposure to extreme heat and cold, constant standing and walking, climbing, working from heights, and ability to lift to 50lbs.
- Must be able to work weekends and overtime as necessary.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge
- Familiarity with safety regulations and commitment to maintaining a safe work environment.
- Basic welding, grinding, and cutting experience; ability to perform maintenance welding to equipment.
- Knowledge of hardware sizes, general mechanics, hand tools, power tools, and repair practices.
- Have a general understanding of conveyors, crushers, screens, screws, and other aggregate processing equipment.
- Solid knowledge of mechanical systems, including conveyors, pumps, motors, and other related equipment. Any certifications will be considered a plus. Ability to interpret service manuals, diagrams, and schematics.
- Understanding of preventive maintenance practices and ability to develop and follow maintenance schedules.
- Basic knowledge of mathematics and fractions for hardware.
- Knowledge of principles and practices used to diagnose equipment issues.
Skills/Abilities
- Able to proficiently operate a forklift, manlift, and other service equipment as required.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills to identify and resolve equipment malfunctions.
- Good communication skills to effectively interact with colleagues and convey technical information.
- Ability to work independently or as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to understand and follow the oral and written instructions sufficient to carry out repair orders and understand maintenance records and equipment specifications.
- Ability to maintain basic records for repair work done.
- Ability to perform assigned tasks properly and in a timely manner.
