Humanities Full-Time Instructor Position

St. Johns River State College is a public college that serves three counties in northeast Florida, south of Jacksonville: Clay, Putnam, and St. Johns. Although SJR State offers three Bachelor’s degrees (Early Childhood Education, Nursing, and Organizational Management), the main focus is Associate’s (two year) degrees. In fact, 78% of our students chose the Associate in Arts as their primary degree during Fall 2021. For the 2021-2022 academic year, our annual enrollment was 9,606. During Fall 2021, our enrollment by predominant campus was: Orange Park 1,080; Palatka 510; St. Augustine 1,025; Distance Learning (online) 3,331; and Off Campus Dual Enrollment 1,317.

  • This is a nine-month teaching position that starts on August 10, 2023 and is renewable upon satisfactory performance.
  • This position will office on the St. Augustine campus.
  • The teaching responsibilities will be on the St. Augustine campus but may be subject to change depending on student enrollment.
  • The teaching responsibilities are 5 days a week with a combination of Mon/Wed/Fri (morning), Mon/Wed (afternoon), Tues/Thurs (morning, afternoon), and 1 evening class per semester. There is an expectation to teach online classes in the future.
  • The base teaching load is 15 contact hours during both fall and spring semesters.
  • The primary course to be taught is HUM 2020 Introduction to Humanities. However, there may be a need to teach the following courses: o HUM 2220 Greek and Roman Humanities o HUM 2223 Late Roman and Medieval Humanities o HUM 2233 Renaissance and Baroque Humanities o HUM 2234 Enlightenment and Romanticism Humanities o HUM 2250 20th Century Humanities
  • Full-time faculty are required to hold 10 office hours per week.

Here are some additional requirements.

  • First year full-time faculty are required to attend our Active Learning Workshop. This is an eight-part series that meets once a month on Friday afternoons, September through April. Faculty are engaged in peer discussion of active learning strategies. The workshop is an opportunity for faculty to engage in dialogue with each other and share best practices about the teaching and learning process in the collegiate environment.
  • Faculty are required to complete our Distance Learning Academy prior to teaching online classes.
  • Full-time faculty are required to attend fall and spring graduation ceremonies, as well as purchase their own cap and gown.
  • Full-time faculty are required to attend orientation, department, and professional development meetings.
  • First year full-time faculty are assigned a mentor to help them get acclimated to the college. After the first semester, full-time faculty are expected to mentor and evaluate adjunct and dual enrollment faculty.
