Turning Point, Inc in Mount Clemens, MI is a non-profit, 501(c)(3) organization qualified employer for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). Turning Point, Inc empowers survivors of domestic and sexual violence through comprehensive services and resources while advocating for community action to end oppression and violence. We offer emergency shelter, housing, trauma advocacy services, forensic nurse examiner program & first response advocacy services, 24-hour hotline, personal protection order and legal advocacy services, and community outreach.
POSITION OVERVIEW:
The Human Trafficking Outreach Specialist works as part of a team providing empowerment-based and trauma-informed advocacy, crisis intervention, and resources to survivors of human trafficking. In addition, the Outreach Specialist works with community partners to encourage referrals into our human trafficking program and reach survivors of human trafficking throughout the region. The Outreach Specialist will provide these services at multiple sites including shelter environments, transitional housing, community agencies, courts, schools etc. to increase survivor’s access to resources and services.
Human Trafficking Outreach Specialist must have knowledge of survivor-centered, trauma-informed, and advocacy-based interventions with survivors of human trafficking, that are rooted in anti-oppression values, harm-reductive, and empowerment-based models. Specific knowledge in crisis intervention, trauma-informed response, lethality assessments, and safety optioning are desired. As we serve survivors of all gender identities, sexual orientations, and backgrounds, candidates must demonstrate the
ability to work with diverse populations.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Implement agency and program mission, vision, and anti-oppression / empowerment philosophies
- Administer and implement agency policies and procedures
- Maintain agency policy on confidentiality, record keeping, and professional ethics
- Demonstrate, mirror, and develop crisis interventions skills for children, adults, and survivor help networks
- Ensure that survivors are effectively resourced with communications aids, Behavioral Health, and Substance Use support
- Develop and understand a survivor-centered safety optioning using harm reductive techniques
- Assist survivors in assessing their lethality and work on future-based planning
- Engage with survivors using the Housing First model within both Turning Point facilities and the community
- Help to lesson institutional harm by learning and understanding the empowerment model.
- Support survivors by attending appointments, aiding in their process towards recovery, and by using patience and listening skills
- Provide ethical and excellent empowerment-based advocacy on behalf and alongside survivors with agencies like Child Protective Services, Workforce Services, Financial institutions, housing subsidiaries, etc.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to ensure immediate, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate response and intervention to survivor needs
- Partake and contribute to weekly supervision, and ongoing meetings with the Human Trafficking team
- Document all advocacy and services provided using the agencies database, and collect required data for monthly reports and program evaluations per the Human Trafficking grant
- Participate in all departmental / agency staff meetings, and trainings required by Turning Point
- Participate in trauma-informed and survivor-centered trainings to become a strong Human Trafficking advocate and support for survivors in need
- Conduct relationships with colleagues to promote mutual respect and equity, improvement of services, and problem-solving agency wide
- Notify the Director of Human Trafficking, Senior Strategy Director, or Chief Executive Officer of any emergency situations that may affect Turning Point staff and / or clients
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Director of Human Trafficking
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Desired candidate should possess a bachelor’s degree in Social Work or related field with a minimum of one-year experience providing domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking services or an Associate’s Degree with 3-5 years of experience providing services to survivors of domestic violence, sexual assault, or human trafficking.
- Knowledge of cultural and societal influences on domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking survivors.
- In-depth knowledge about the impact and long-term consequences of domestic violence, sexual assault, and human trafficking.
- Must have knowledge of survivor-based populations and needs.
- Must have knowledge of medical and criminal justice systems response to survivors’ rights, and community resources.
- Must have knowledge of, or willingness to learn, crisis intervention theory and the empowerment strength-based model.
- Must have strong written and verbal communication skills
- Must have reliable transportation, insurance, a valid Michigan Driver’s License and a good driving record. Travel between Turning Point’s counseling sites is required.
- Must pass central registry and criminal background check as a condition of employment.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
- Must be able to work onsite, not remotely
- Must be able to work independently.
- Allows for flexibility in schedule and job function.
- Able to drive to various sites/agencies to provide services.
- Ability and willingness to be available for non-scheduled emergency call-in when necessary.
- Ability to lift 20 pounds.
SALARY:
The Outreach Specialist position begins at an annual salary of $40,000 and is commensurate with qualifications. Salary includes excellent benefits including medical, dental, vision, life insurance/AD&D, short-term and long-term disability, and paid time off. Retirement plan options are also available.
