Housing Navigator, VASH Job at 1736 Family Crisis Center
1736 Family Crisis Center offers four confidentially located domestic violence shelters, a confidentially located emergency youth shelter, a bridge shelter for unhoused women, an in-house legal department, a job development and placement program, five 24-hour crisis hotlines, a FamilySource Center Program, a Veteran Families Program, and four Community Service Centers that provide outpatient counseling and supportive services for low-income community residents from 21 residential, outpatient services, and co-location sites throughout Los Angeles and Orange Counties. All services are provided free of charge in English and Spanish. Additionally, the agency coordinates outreach and educational activities to promote awareness of domestic violence, youth homelessness, and low-income/poverty issues while offering linkages to available resources for the community.
POSITION SUMMARY:
The SSVF Housing Navigator (VASH) assists homeless veterans who have been referred by the VASH program in locating, and securing permanent housing. The Housing Navigator will perform extensive outreach to landlords, property managers, nonprofit housing providers, and create a database of available permanent housing units and landlords who are program friendly. They will develop positive working relationships with the VA VASH program staff, local housing authorities and CES (Coordinated Entry Systems), working collaboratively to ensure an efficient application & housing placement process.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct housing assessments and create housing placement plans for participants
- Coordinate with VASH social workers and/or SSVF case managers to integrate housing placement plan with overall service plan & participant goals
- Perform outreach to landlords and property management companies to locate available units
- Collaborate with the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs and housing authorities to streamline the VASH application/screening/inspection process
- Collaborate with landlords and case managers to mediate tenant issues and ensure housing stability
- Develop materials and provide training and information on tenant rights and responsibilities
- Work consultatively with other staff to ensure progress toward service plan goals and housing placement and retention
- Prepare detailed case notes and maintain detailed files on each participant
- Input client data into the HMIS system, as required
- Participate in conferences, workshops, special projects, staff meetings, and other required events
- Other duties as assigned
QUALIFICATIONS:
- Knowledgeable of affordable housing, VASH and Section 8 Programs, Shelter Plus Care and other housing programs
- Knowledgeable about tenant/landlord laws
- Ability to work with landlords and present the organization and participants in a positive light
- Experience and knowledge in working with a multidisciplinary treatment team
- Ability to work independently
- Word processing skills required
- Veterans preferred
- Three (3) years of related work experience is preferred
- Educational background can be diverse; however, a Bachelor's Degree is preferred.
