The Health Care Assistant provides support to our residents at the Maryknoll Sisters Center. This position primarily works 3:00pm - 11:00pm Monday – Friday with alternating weekends. This position is paid the base salary listed plus a $1.00 shift differential for evening hours.

On each shift, the Health Care Assistant performs duties as specified by the Nurse Supervisor. Duties can include assisting our sisters with daily activities such as showering, getting ready for bed, eating dinner, participating in an activity or just being a companion. A primary goal is ensuring Sisters are safe throughout their home.

If a sister who lives in any area of the Center needs to go to the hospital for an emergency, the Health Care Assistant goes with the sister as a companion, either in the ambulance or by using a Maryknoll Sisters vehicle. The Health Care Assistant remains with the sister and is relieved at the end of the shift if the sister needs to stay at the hospital after the shift ends. Information regarding the hospital plan of care for the sister is relayed to the Nurse Supervisor.

Time is also spent on other tasks, which vary, as assigned by the Nurse Supervisor depending on the needs of the sisters each day.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

(a) Ability to provide efficient and proper health care in an appropriate home-care fashion, reinforcing self-care.

(b) Ability to understand, be patient with, and encourage sick, elderly and/or disabled residents; Ability to provide comfort and security to residents during health emergencies.

(c) Energy, and stamina to walk and stand much of the time, and to provide physical assistance (including lifting) for residents.

(d) Flexibility to accept schedule and work assignment changes.

(e) Maintains the privacy and security of all confidential and protected health information. Uses and discloses only that information which is necessary to perform the function of the job.

(f) Ability to receive, understand and communicate information; Ability to take notes and pass on information to Nurse Supervisor/Nurse.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Previous work providing home health care or companion assistance.

Must have a valid and clean Driver's License.

MINIMUM FORMAL EDUCATION REQUIRED

High School Graduate or equivalent.
