Job Description
Ohio University Libraries seeks an innovative, creative, user-focused, and forward-thinking leader to serve in the position of Head of Learning Services. The Learning Services department was recently formed through a strategic reorganization that will increase collaboration and prioritize forward-thinking library work. The Head of Learning Services will lead and manage a department of 11 professional librarians in the development, management, and execution of programming focused on information literacy concepts, affordable educational resources, and digital humanities pedagogy. The Head of Learning Services will promote Libraries and University collaborations to deliver this programming on all campuses. The department head will also oversee library operations and the provision of services in distributed libraries on the Athens and regional campuses.
Specifically, the Head of Learning Services:
  • Leads and manages the development, assessment, and sharing of instructional resources and programming related to information literacy and library research and tools, including oversight of the education components of the Libraries’ events and orientation programming.
  • Works with campus partners such as the Center for Teaching, Learning, & Assessment (CTLA), instructors, orientation staff, instructional designers and technologists, as well as library staff to meet curricular needs, promote library resources and services, and enhance student learning experiences via Libraries’ events and collaborative community programming.
  • Leads and manages the development, assessment, and delivery of the Libraries’ programming and supports (including librarian and instructor professional development) for instructor engagement with affordable course materials (free, open, and library-licensed).
  • Works collaboratively with other units, including instructors, instructional designers and technologists, CTLA, Office of Information Technology, and students to promote services and resources to advance understandings around course materials costs and impacts.
  • Develops collaborations across the Libraries and the University to deliver programming in support of digital humanities pedagogies in order to integrate information literacy concepts, library resources, or library staff expertise into the curriculum and student learning experiences.
  • Supervises, sets goals, assigns projects, and provides direction and oversight for all departmental staff and the distributed libraries, including Music & Dance Library in Glidden Hall on the Athens campus and the regional campus libraries in Chillicothe, Eastern, Lancaster, Southern, and Zanesville.
  • Works collaboratively with other Libraries’ department heads and on-site campus units on operational and collection management initiatives and efficiencies.
  • Engages in regular professional development through research, publications, presentations, and participation in regional, national, and/or international professional bodies as part of a continuing commitment to bringing best practices and innovative services to the Libraries.
  • Participates in the work of professional librarians in the Libraries by serving as liaison to an academic area and/or service to the Libraries through committees, teams, or task forces.

Minimum Qualifications
  • Master’s degree in Library and Information Science from an ALA accredited school or from a master’s level program in library and information studies accredited or recognized by the appropriate national body of another country
  • Minimum 3 years of library work experience
  • Minimum 1 year of management experience


Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with developing digital learning resources, including instructional videos, tutorials, or LMS modules
  • Experience with instructional programming in an academic library
  • Coursework or experience with open educational practices
  • Experience with or coursework in digital humanities in the classroom
  • Demonstrated commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion in managerial, instructional, and programming practices
  • Excellent interpersonal, written, and verbal communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects, set priorities, and exercise flexibility
  • Demonstrated success in a collaborative environment
