Under the supervision of the Parks Operations Manager, provides general labor required for the maintenance of parklands, building and grounds repair, and improvement. Enforces the established rules of the Ottawa County Parks & Recreation Department based on specific guidelines. There are multiple open positions available. The working location for the positions is at the Park Operations Center (POC) in West Olive, MI, and Hager Park in Jenison, MI. The employee will also travel to various county parks and locations as needed.
The position(s) can work 40 hours per week, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. with weekends off. Position begins work late April/May 2022 and works through early September (Labor Day) 2022. Must be available for day, weekend, and possibly holiday working hours. This is a seasonal, non-benefited position.
The main job duty will be mowing park turf areas. Experience with commercial mowing equipment is preferred.
Additional duties will include but are not limited to:
Painting, tree and shrub trimming, landscaping, building and grounds, site inspection, repair, and carpentry. Capable of operating various power tools including saws, drills, sanders, etc. Must be willing to learn new skills, have a desire to achieve high standards and work independently.
Returning Grounds Attendant receives $13.50 (2nd year), $13.75 (3rd year), and $14.00 (4th year).
The essential functions of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Operates a variety of commercial mowers, edgers, and other turf and grass maintenance equipment.
- Operates landscaping machinery as needed including tractors, chippers, and other equipment.
- Trims trees, remove downed trees and chips accumulated brush.
- Checks and/or change fluids and filters; lubricates moving mechanical parts; checks batteries, tire pressure, and tread wear; and performs other preventative maintenance for park vehicles and equipment.
- Performs trail maintenance including surface maintenance and tree trimming/removal.
- Paints buildings, various park fixtures, and signs.
- Inspects and identifies repair or replacement of damaged, deteriorated, or obsolete signage, structures, features, landscape forms, and park fixtures.
- Purchases materials and supplies for repairs and improvements, using Parks funds.
- Operates a variety of power tools such as saws, drills, sanders, routers, etc. for repair and improvement of park facilities.
- Transports equipment from park site to park site.
- Performs other functions as assigned.
Must be 18 years of age or older.
High school diploma or GED, or currently enrolled in high school, is preferred but not required.
The qualified candidate will have the following knowledge and skills:
- Working knowledge of the maintenance construction trades, including painting, carpentry, electrical and electronic repair, plumbing, etc.
- Working knowledge of grounds maintenance.
- Knowledge of preventive maintenance programs and practices.
- Working knowledge of the proper use of manual and power tools commonly used in the maintenance construction trade.
- Ability to layout work efficiently so as to minimize man-hours and materials required to properly complete work.
- Knowledge of OSHA/MIOSHA occupational health and safety rules, regulations and requirements, and safety protocols and practices.
- Ability to interact positively and constructively with coworkers, supervisors, contractors, and members of the general public with diverse cultural and socio-economic backgrounds.
Physical Requirements:
- Must have sufficient visual acuity, with or without corrective lenses, to visually align components of structural features, equipment, operating systems, etc.; accurately read gauges and take measurements; and identify damage to or deterioration of facility features, fixtures, furnishings, operating systems and components thereof.
- Must have sufficient visual color discrimination to properly match color-coded pairs of electrical wires.
- Must have sufficient auditory ability, with or without audiological devices, to hear alarms, other warning signals, and vehicle signals indicating backward or forward motion.
- Must be able to descend to and ascend from floor and ground level several times per day to repair features and fixtures mounted at or near ground/floor level.
- Must be able to work with arms extended above shoulder level for the entire length of a shift to repair or replace features, fixtures, systems, and/or components thereof mounted at or above shoulder height.
- Must be able to ascend/descend ladders in order to access features, fixtures, systems, and/or components thereof located in ceilings or on rooftops.
- Must be able to operate and ride in lift devices to access rooftops and exterior lighting systems.
- Must have sufficient manual strength and dexterity to use small hand and power tools.
- Must be able to lift and move equipment and materials weighing up to 50 lbs. with or without mechanical or other assistance.
- Must have sufficient strength and mobility in wrists, elbows, and shoulders to operate power tools commonly used in construction trades.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to extreme temperatures; dirt, dust, pollen, and other airborne particulates; and inclement weather conditions.
- Must be able to tolerate exposure to custodial and other chemicals, solvents, adhesives, caulks and other compounds and chemicals commonly used in facilities maintenance.
- Must be able to enter and maneuver in confined spaces in order to access mechanical rooms and operating systems.
- Must be able to wear all required safety clothing and equipment.
Working Conditions:
While performing the essential functions of this position the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical and electrical hazards; noxious fumes; dust, dirt, and other airborne particulates; extremes of temperature and humidity; solvents; detergents; noise; and other hazards. Evening, weekend, and holiday hours may be required
