Based in Massachusetts, Bonhams Skinner holds around 80 sales a year in 20 collecting categories including Americana, Fine Art and Collectibles, and Wine, and ranging from fine violins to contemporary paintings.
About the Role
Bonhams Skinner is seeking an experienced Generalist of antiques and fine art to join our team of specialists. The Appraisal & Auction Services Department, located in our Marlborough office, is the first point of contact for individuals or organisations considering Skinner for appraisal or the consignment of material at auction.
Responsibilities
- Complete appraisals for estate, gift tax purposes, and insurance complete with identification (country of origin and date) and clear description
- Answer general inquiries regarding selling at auction and appraisal services
- Answer client submissions for auction estimates
- Provide in-house property review for consignment
- Travel extensively to perform on site appraisals and evaluations
- Liaise into the auction schedule to assist with sale registration, internet bidding, phone bidding, etc.
- Night and weekend work as needed
Key Skills & Attributes
- 2-5 years' experience in appraising antiques in an auction house, gallery, museum, or related field
- Experience with the identification, evaluation, and completion of written appraisals of antiques and fine art
- USPAP Certification a plus
- Excellent communication, interpersonal and administrative skills, attention to detail, can-do attitude
- Ability to work in a face paced environment, juggling multiple tasks and deadlines
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft office
- Ability to learn existing Auction and Inventory Management System
- Reliable transportation for extensive daily travel
