Position Information


TxDOT’s Ellis County is looking for a General Transportation Tech I, II, or III for the Area Office construction inspection based in Waxahachie, TX. A General Transportation Technician for construction inspection gets out in the field and oversee the construction of our roadways. We are looking for hard-working, dedicated individuals who enjoy learning new things and getting their hands dirty. Our current inspection projects include new roadway construction, bridge demolitions and replacements, farm-to-market rehabilitations, and various other roadway projects. Position Description


General Transportation Tech I: Performs routine (Learning) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, maintenance, and/or material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level follow standard practices that do not require frequent supervision of details.



General Transportation Tech II: Performs moderately complex (Intermediate) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspections roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.



General Transportation Tech III: Performs highly complex (Advanced) transportation operations or maintenance support work such as construction, contract maintenance, and material and process inspection; roadway maintenance and repair; operates light and heavy equipment; preventative and minor maintenance on equipment; traffic control; helping the public during emergency situations; and training other employees. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.


Essential Duties:

General Transportation Tech I, II or III:

  • Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Inspects construction, contract maintenance methods, and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications.
  • Maintains construction project records and processes related paperwork.
  • Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.

Additional duties for a General Transportation Tech II or III to include:

  • Serves as the only inspector on a small project.
  • Conducts tests of highway construction materials, makes calculations and records results.

Additional duties for a General Transportation Tech III to include:

  • Inspects traffic control devices and their placement at construction project sites for compliance with specifications for devices; safety laws, rules, regulations and the Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
  • Trains other employees.
  • Maintains construction project records and bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures.

Minimum Qualifications:

Experience:
General Transportation Tech I: No previous experience required.
General Transportation Tech II: 1 year in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.*
General Transportation Tech III: 2 years in engineering support, maintenance, construction, heavy equipment operation, roadway maintenance work, or related experience.*

  • Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications

Licenses and Certifications:

Valid driver’s license. This position requires driving a state vehicle.

  • Methods, procedures, equipment and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work
  • Plan review methods, processes and procedures
  • Using applicable electronic test equipment
  • Public relations for maintaining effective working relationships with individuals and groups, both internal and external

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:

  • Standing-prolonged periods of time.
  • Medium work: Lift up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lift or carry objects up to 25 lbs.
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat; below 32 and/or above 100 degrees for more than one hour.
  • Subject to hazards-moving vehicles/mechanical parts, high places/heat, or chemicals.
  • Required to wear protective gear-respirator, hard hat, or other device.
  • Climbing - ascending/descending ladders, stairs, scaffoldings, ramps, etc.
  • Balancing-walking, standing, crouching on various surfaces without falling.
  • Stooping-bending body downward and forward by bending spine at waist.
  • Kneeling-bending legs at knee to come to a rest on knee(s).
  • Crouching-bending body downward and forward by bending leg(s) and spine.
  • Reaching-extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Talking- expressing or exchanging ideas by spoken words.
  • Hearing-perceive sound at normal speaking levels; received information by oral communication.
