Job Summary


The DNR Regional Office in New Ulm is hiring a full-time, permanent General Repair Worker. Days of work will be Monday-Friday. This position works with the Management Resources Regional Supervisor to manage the day-to-day activities for the operation of the South Region complex. This position is also responsible for assisting with the DNR's Regional Facility Management Program activities, working towards a safe, functional, and well-maintained facility, and promoting cost-effective preservation and maintenance of the department's facilities. This position performs semi-skilled tasks in a variety of trade areas both indoors and outdoors. The tasks include making minor adjustments and repairs to machinery, buildings, and equipment.

Responsibilities include:

  • Direct and provide maintenance and daily tasks for the South Region Headquarters buildings and grounds to ensure facilities are functional, safe, clean and presentable including plumbing, mechanical, electrical, security systems, and other trades.
  • Provide support to OSD programs in the region including Fleet, Buildings and Sustainability (BAS) and Safety.
  • Perform duties such as safety equipment checks, freight receiving and distribution, painting, janitorial duties, lawn maintenance, and snow removal.
  • Coordinate the operation, maintenance, and inspection of the hazardous materials storage so that hazardous materials are stored safely and according to applicable codes.
  • Maintain a comprehensive condition assessment of facilities throughout the region.

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Experience performing semi-skilled work in trade areas (i.e. carpentry, plumbing, minor electrical, masonry, roofing, HVAC system operation/maintenance).
  • Knowledge of building components, mechanical and electrical systems, building codes, construction methods, and architectural and engineering principles.
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, establish priorities, and make appropriate decisions.
  • Basic knowledge of occupational hazards, safety requirements, and the types of personal protective equipment appropriate to carry out tasks.
  • Demonstrated experience in methods and practices related to mechanical, construction, or carpentry trades.
  • Skills in the operation of heavy equipment (snow plow), vehicles, power tools, and hand tools sufficient to carry out a variety of land and building management tasks.
  • Ability to manage preventative maintenance schedules of equipment and buildings, track inventory of supplies, parts, and safety equipment, conduct safety inspections of buildings, maintain current logs of vehicle and fuel use, etc.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions sufficient to carry out work orders and understand equipment operation specifications.
  • Ability to work as a team member and cooperate with co-workers.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Carpentry experience, including but not limited to replace door handles, replace caulking/sealant around windows, shingle a shed, repair a rain gutter, etc.
  • Working knowledge of the construction trades, including frame and log construction, electrical, plumbing, heating, water and sanitation systems, masonry, asphalt and landscaping.
  • Knowledge of state and local codes sufficient to collaborate on design and implementation of development and maintenance projects on buildings and facilities.
  • Knowledge of proper building maintenance procedures.
  • Basic computer skills with knowledge and application of windows based operating systems, databases and spreadsheet applications, word processing applications, and email.

Physical Requirements

Medium Work - Occasionally lifting articles such as 50 pound bags maximum and frequently lifting and/or carrying objects such as heavy tools and file boxes. This job may require walking or standing to a significant degree on rough terrain or may involve sitting most of the time with pushing and pulling of arm and/or leg controls.

Additional Requirements

This position requires an unrestricted Class D Driver’s License with a clear driving record.
