MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Routine grounds maintenance around the clubhouse, clubhouse terrace and courtyards, driveway and entrance. Blowing, debris clean up, etc.
• Responsible for detail trimming/ pruning/ thinning shrubs, formal boxwood and holly hedges, ground covers, vines and some trees around the clubhouse grounds, pool area, and golf course with hand-held tools and 2-cycle equipment.
• Maintains annual color beds and planters around the clubhouse, pool area, pavilion and golf course. Assisting in design ideas, planting, dead heading, and watering.
• Performs removal, installation and maintenance of plant material in beds and containers, and manual weeding.
• Identifies need for and provides supplemental water with manual operation of automatic irrigation zones and hand watering.
• Performs equipment maintenance as required.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

SCOPE: Responsible for performing basic Gardener functions including: Shrub installation, maintenance of all foliage, detailing and clean up, watering, equipment operating, mulching, and annual color maintenance.

EDUCATION: High school degree or GED. Horticulture education or courses/ certificate preferred.

EXPERIENCE: 1-3 years landscape maintenance experience in commercial, residential or resort environment required; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Annual Care

Install, remove, deadhead, and fertilize. Process includes repetitive loading, unloading and transporting trays of annuals. Bed preparation requires digging and lifting shovels of soil, use of a wheelbarrow, operation of a tiller, grading with rakes using force. Includes maintenance of hanging baskets and container plantings.

Requires alternate reaching, lifting, carrying, balancing, stooping, stretching, and gripping of hand tools. Trays of annuals sometimes weighing over 15 pounds are unloaded from nursery racks up to eight feet high. Tiller requires lateral control of heavy vibration. Unloading of debris into dumpsters requires overhead lifting.

Shrub Pruning

Operating hand or power equipment to selectively cut plant material at varying heights, boxwood and holly hedges, followed by cleanup of debris. Knowledge/ experience with hand pruning shrubs and selective thinning pruning.

Method includes very repetitive reaching, gripping, and raking, lifting and bagging of debris. Debris bags are also loaded, transported, and unloaded into a dumpster by lifting weight overhead.

Mulching

Loading, unloading and spreading mulch or pine straw in plant beds.

Repetitive shoveling, forking, and lifting of debris. Controlled movement of loaded wheelbarrow is often required, as well as lifting, shoveling or forking old mulch well overhead into dumpsters.

Raking and Sweeping

Using hand rake to gather materials.

Forceful pulling, pushing and lifting of debris.

Plant Replacement

Digging and removing plants - digging and installing new plants.

Substantial repetitive use of shovels and spades is required. Plant material is manually carried into new planting areas, and larger material transported on dolly or cart must be carefully lifted and placed.

Watering

Connecting and dragging water hoses for hand watering.

Forceful control and lifting of weighted hoses and watering cans is required, using outstretched arm movements for extended periods of time.
