Since 1945 East Los Angeles College (ELAC) has been transforming the lives of students in the East and Southeast Los Angeles area through education and career opportunities. ELAC has an international, multicultural student body that complements the community around the college with more than 80% of students identifying as Hispanic/Latino, 12% identifying as Asian, 58% identifying as female, and more than 30% aged 25 or older. East Los Angeles College is seeking applicants for a full-time position in Political Science. The assignment may include teaching at off-campus centers, high schools, online live, online, hyflex, and/or evening and weekend classes.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The assignment requires teaching at the Monterey Park college campus and the South Gate Educational Center. The teaching load is 15 hours per week, plus regular office hours and participation in department and college governance activities through committee service and/or other appropriate activities. The department offers a full range of courses beginning at 7:10 a.m. and ending at 10:00 p.m. as well as online courses that students can access 24/7. Some evening and/or Saturday assignments may be required. Faculty must be available to teach anytime within those hours. Duties will include and are not limited to:
- Teach introductory courses in Political Science;
- Participate in the evaluation, revision, and development of the curriculum;
- Participate in the development of resources, materials, and strategies, including using multimedia technology, to teach students in a multicultural environment;
- Participate in campus and department activities;
- Fulfill professional development activities according to institutional guidelines.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
:
- Master’s in political science, government, or international relations; OR
- Bachelor’s in any of the above AND Master’s in economics, history, public administration, social science, sociology, and any ethnic studies, Juris Doctor Degree (J.D.) or Legum Baccalaureus (LL.B.);
- OR the equivalent
- Candidates for this position must demonstrate sensitivity to, and understanding of, the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disabled and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty and staff members.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
A medical evaluation indicating fitness to work in the district is required for new employees at the expense of the candidate.
Pursuant to LACCD Board of Trustee's Policy 2900, all students and employees must be fully vaccinated or have an approved exemption. LACCD employees are required to provide their vaccination status in compliance with the LACCD Board of Trustees’ policy. Newly hired employees will be required to provide their vaccination status prior to starting a position or, at the latest, by their position start date.
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

- Effective teaching experience, ideally at the community college level;
- Possess an excellent academic record that indicates a strong background in political science and related fields;
- Exhibit and express a commitment to maintain an up-to-date knowledge of recent developments in political science;
- Experience teaching introductory courses in political science;
- Ability and willingness to teach a wide variety of classes as schedules, students' interests, and institutional commitments require;
- Experience designing and teaching curricula that incorporate best practices in diversity, equity, anti-racism, anti-sexism, inclusion, and accessibility, and are responsive to the needs and interests of underprepared and/or historically underrepresented students;
- Demonstrated ability to work effectively with first-generation college students using multi-modal approaches and student-centered pedagogy;
- Experience with or a willingness to develop and teach courses online or using other distance-learning methodologies;
- Experience in the development, assessment, and evaluation of student learning outcomes;
- Willingness to participate actively in departmental committees and projects as well as college-wide committee work and collegial governance;
- Commitment to ongoing professional development and learning;
- Openness to work with student organizations and serve as a faculty advisor;
- Demonstrated ability to work closely and collaboratively with students and colleagues in support of a positive, productive, and professional academic environment;
- Ability to contribute to the overall mission of the college.
SALARY AND BENEFITS:
Under the 2020-2023 AFT Agreement, the salaries for entry-level positions, which include long-term substitutes, range from $66,220 to $103,100. The doctorate differential is $418 per month for the academic school year. The Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) provides fringe benefits including a choice of dental and medical plans, voluntary life insurance, income protection insurance and vision care. Optional teaching assignments may include winter and summer intersessions. In addition to the State Teachers’ Retirement System (STRS), employees have the option to participate in a 403b plan.

EVALUATION PROCEDURES:
- A college selection committee will review all complete applications received. The committee screening will involve an evaluation of the candidate’s qualifications in the areas of training and experience as determined from the application package and recommendations from referents.
- Following the committee screening, selected candidates will be invited for an interview. Successful candidates will be called back for a classroom teaching demonstration.
- Based upon the committee recommendation, finalists will interview with the president and vice president, who will make the final selection.
