Job Summary: The Forensic Assistant position supports the forensic pathologist in all aspects of autopsy performance while maintaining the entire autopsy area in compliance with national accreditation, safety and hygiene standards. This job exists to safeguard the privacy, property and security of persons and materials entrusted to the care of the Medical Examiner's office.

Job Summary: The Forensic Assistant position supports the forensic pathologist in all aspects of autopsy performance while maintaining the entire autopsy area in compliance with national accreditation, safety and hygiene standards. This job exists to safeguard the privacy, property and security of persons and materials entrusted to the care of the Medical Examiner's office.
Job Responsibilities: Under supervision:
- Perform pre-autopsy tasks. Generate all necessary paperwork for daily caseload, move bodies (sometimes upwards of 400lbs.) to and from autopsy suite, take necessary photographs, assist in the collection of trace evidence, and maintain chain of custody.
- Perform autopsy tasks. Open torso and head, eviscerate/weigh organs, draw and label specimens. When necessary, instruct MCW residents on evisceration techniques. Follow directive of pathologist for any additional support. Suture body, clean, and prepare body for release.
- Operate and Perform digital X-rays. Prepare and maintain digital x-ray equipment as needed. Position decedents for imaging exams and produce diagnostic images of injuries or lack thereof, as well as images of unique identifying features, while also ensuring safety of employees. Maintain back-up storage of all equipment.
- Perform post-autopsy tasks. Prepare tissue specimens and organs for further study. Generate additional paperwork, maintain accurate written and computer records of caseload and other inventories, scan all necessary paperwork. Transport specimens/materials to/from service location.
- Maintain autopsy area and equipment. Maintain cleanliness of autopsy suite in accordance with OSHA and industry standards. Maintain cleanliness and integrity of all equipment, tools and instruments, and ensure adequate inventory stock of all autopsy supplies. Dispose of specimens and tissue as directed.
- Assist in admission/release of bodies and property when necessary.
- High volume and variable work demand and deadlines which impose strain on a routine basis. Direct contact with distressed individuals in the immediate work environment.
- Subject to loud noises and offensive smells over 75% of work time; routine contact with infectious diseases, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, TB, HIV, Hep-C, etc.
- Perform additional duties, including maintaining archives and other projects.
- Must be a current resident of the state of Wisconsin.
- Have a current Wisconsin Driver's License which can be maintained throughout employment
- Possess an associate degree in human Anatomy, Biology, Mortuary Science, Surgical Technology OR must possess a minimum of sixty (60) college level credits from an accredited college/university.
- At least one (1) year of experience working in a hospital/clinical lab OR in a role where you performed cadaver prep/transport/recovery is required.
- Ability to lift/carry up to 50lbs AND push/pull up to 100lbs on a frequent basis; as well as 400lbs with assistant when needed.
- Ability to work in an environment with loud noises and offensive smells over 75% of work time.
- Experience using syringes, needles, tape measures, scissors, thermometers, bone saws, scalpels, “T”, personal computers, x-ray equipment, and a digital camera is preferred.
- Note: Position requires a criminal background check; felony and some misdemeanor convictions would be a barrier to employment
