This position is with the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife’s (ODFW) Oregon Hatchery Research Center located in Alsea, OR.

What you will do:
Major duties will involve:
  • Care for fish and perform grounds and equipment maintenance and other related duties. Pond, feed, grade, and collect eggs from wild and hatchery fish; shock, pick, and enumerate eggs; regulate water supplies; remove mortality; and recognize and treat fish diseases. Record and maintain information on amount and type of feed received and fed, water quality, fish mortalities, and liberations and maintain gas, oil, and mileage records. Weigh, count, and load fish and eggs for transfer and liberation; operate liberation trucks; and distribute fish.
  • Maintain, construct, and perform minor repairs to ponds and walkways, fish feeders, egg trays, and screens. Maintain and repair hatchery buildings and residences, fish pumps, lawn mowers, power tools, roads, and trails.
  • Maintain lawns, shrubs, and trees.

Occasional duties will involve:
  • Work in cooperation with Oregon State University and other researchers, give tours to the public and visiting dignitaries.
  • Assist in training volunteers and researchers on the proper operation of the facility.
  • Assist in teaching students who visit the facility, giving tours, and answering questions of the public.

Working Conditions
  • Must work in all kinds of weather, in cold water for extended periods of time. Unassisted lifting of weights up to, but not exceeding, 50 pounds (Feed sacks) is routine. Must contact supervisors during extreme weather conditions to see if help is needed to protect the resource and the facility. Must work effectively as a team member.
  • The duties of this position include as an essential function the possession and use of a SPOTs Card for work-related purchases. Prior to being issued a SPOTs Card the employee must meet all necessary requirements in accordance with ODFW Policy ASD_205_03—SPOTS, including completing ODFW SPOTs Card training. Continued eligibility to possess and use a SPOTs Card requires that the holder remain in full compliance with ODFW policy ASD_250_03—SPOTS. The successful candidate will be subject to a criminal history background check with fingerprinting and will be subject to annual checks during employment.
  • Requires a flexible work schedule that varies in the number of hours worked on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day, or a work schedule in which the starting and stopping times vary on a daily basis, but not necessarily each day. This includes working at all hours and workdays in excess of eight hours. Work exceeding 40 hours per week requires prior approval by the supervisor.
  • Work weekends on a rotational basis and may have to respond to emergency situations while working alone.
  • The position requires living on station as a condition of employment and working on an on-call basis as assigned and available to respond to emergency situations.

Criminal Records/DMV Check
Applicants are subject to both a criminal history and motor vehicles check. Driving is required for all positions. Out-of-state finalists will be required to present a current certified driving record for review to be considered for the position. Be prepared to obtain as soon as possible. You are expected to provide the out-of-state certified driving record before an offer can be made unless extenuating circumstances exist. Adverse background and/or driving information may disqualify you from further consideration.

We are seeking applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and have the following skills and experience:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • An Associate degree in Fisheries Technology, Aquaculture or Aquarium Science; OR
  • Eighteen months of fish culture (care of fish) experience. (six months of fisheries, fish screens, wildlife or related habitat work experience will count toward this experience).

A higher level degree in Fisheries Science or a closely-related degree with at least 45 quarter (30 semester) hours of biological/ecological coursework will substitute for the Associate's degree.
