The CalSTRS Financial Planning, Accounting & Reporting Division is seeking a highly motivated individual to work as a Financial Accountant II (Specialist), on the Financial Reporting & Investment Accounting Team.
The Financial Planning, Accounting and Reporting Division is responsible for developing and maintaining the annual financial planning processes, preparing accounting records and managerial reports detailing cost and performance information, and coordinating and preparing the financial statements in compliance with generally accepted accounting principles.
Under general supervision of the Financial Accountant III Supervisor (FA III), the Financial Accountant II (Specialist) (FA II) functions as a specialist reviewing and performing highly technical and professional financial accounting activities that support the general ledger and CalSTRS pension funds. The specialist is considered a technical specialist for the Financial Reporting & Investment Accounting unit (FRIA) who directs and performs highly complex and financial and legal/budgetary accounting tasks that include, but not limited to, monthly close processes, preparation and/or review of quarterly and year-end financial reports, assisting with reporting requirements of issued bonds, review of reconciliations, research and analysis of atypical or highly-complex transactions impacting the organization, assisting with Enterprise Risk Management requirements, and monitoring compliance with stated internal controls of the unit. The FA II is required to maintain an in-depth knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP), Governmental Accounting Standards Board (GASB) pronouncements, the Uniform Accounting System, and related State laws, Teachers’ Retirement Law, rules and regulations.
The ideal candidate will possess the following skills:
- CPA or similar certification
- Excellent project management and organizational skills with the ability to work cross-functionally with staff across the organization to achieve stated project goals
- Experience with SAP accounting software (BusinessDirect, specifically)
- Experience drafting highly technical memos and/or presentations to management
- Highly motivated self-starter with strong work ethic
Telework Information: We offer a hybrid approach including in-office and remote work solutions with staff working on-site at our Headquarters in West Sacramento 2-3 days per week.

Working Conditions
All staff of CalSTRS are employees of the State of California and subject to California employment taxes and withholdings. Upon appointment, staff are required to provide a current California address to CalSTRS Human Resources to be used as a remote work location.
This position is not eligible for visa sponsorship. Applicants must be authorized to work in the US without the need for visa sponsorship by the start date of employment with CalSTRS.

Pay: $7,923.00 - $9,846.00 per month
