Administered by the OHI, CVET is a legislatively mandated program that supports and trains a network of government agencies, individuals, and organizations to aid domestic animals and livestock during natural disasters under a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) and the Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (Cal OES) via strategic partnerships with key stakeholders in the animal disaster response space (e.g., existing CARTS, CalAnimals, CAVMRC, CARES, etc.).

Job Summary

Under the direction of the Associate Director of Operations of the California Veterinary Emergency Team (CVET), this position provides leadership and support in the development and implementation of animal care standards, conducting hands-on training of disaster responders, recommending necessary animal care equipment/supplies, and participating in key stakeholder engagement during and between disasters (primarily wildfires) involving domestic animals and livestock in the state of California. As a lead in CVET’s emergency response functions, this position supports CVET activities in the Operations Section (e.g., clinical veterinary work and managing of care personnel and resources) during disaster response, typically at shelters and/or staging areas. During non-emergency periods, works collaboratively with the CVET team to ensure statewide disaster readiness by assisting in stakeholder engagement/coordination, training/informational workshops, protocol development/revision, engaging in research activities to ensure best achievable response, and assisting with teaching and public service activities as part of the One Health Institute (OHI) and UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine (SVM).

WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Be in good standing in any states where currently or previously licensed.
  • Obtain appropriate OSHA and fire safety training/certification within 30 days of employment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid California Driver’s license and participate in the DMV pull-notice system.
  • Ability to tow a trailer, or willing to learn how to tow a trailer for response operations.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Minimum Education/Experience:

  • Experience in the treatment of, and husbandry for domestic animals and livestock, including preventive medicine (population health).
  • Knowledge and experience in teaching/training (both members of the public and professionals) and communicating veterinary information to volunteers and the public.
  • Strong experience in effectively coordinating and motivating staff and demonstrated leadership and supervisory skills.
  • Experience using personal computers and software programs (word processing, spreadsheet, database, presentation and email programs).

Minimum Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSA) :

  • Advanced skills in diplomacy, oral and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Skill to work as a team member within this structure.
  • Organizational skills and flexibility to adjust workload, responding to diverse and changing deadlines and needs during a disaster.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

Additional Preferred License/Certification:

  • California Registered Veterinary Technician (RVT) license or ability to get within 90 days

Preferred Education/Experience:

  • Graduation from an accredited veterinary technician program
  • Experience managing animal care activities within a disaster response/shelter environment, including supervision of veterinary technicians and assistants, care staff/volunteers and experience in working with a wide variety of species (small animals, equine, avian and livestock)
  • Demonstrated expertise and experience in emergency response management, including experience acting within an Incident Command System utilized in managing emergency situation.
  • Disaster response experience or training with a local animal response organization
  • Experience providing medical care to compromised animals in a stressful setting, including administration of medication, fluid therapy, feeding, and other treatments.
