Fast Track Partner Position: Machen McChesney is seeking a Tax Manager with 5+ years of experience in public accounting. This position has great potential to lead to a partner position quickly. The position is in our Montgomery, AL office.

The Tax Manager is responsible for contributing to the achievement of our objectives, including:

  • Assisting with existing client accounts assigned to you by the partner group
  • Supervising staff assigned to your projects
  • Detail review of the work prepared by staff assigned to your projects
  • Assisting with office administration, including staff coaching, mentoring and training, quality control, strategic planning, scheduling, software implementation, etc.

Position Responsibilities

The primary responsibilities of the Tax Manager are:

  • Project Management
    • Assigning adequate resources to projects in light of other scheduling requirements
    • Resource scheduling and schedule management including sizing projects, establishing budgets for time spent in each phase, and then directing resources to meet the budgets and client expectations
    • Managing budgets for his/her projects, raising red flags to the partner group when a project grows out of scope or is moving toward a budgetary or timing overage
    • Supervising staff assigned to his/her projects to ensure that schedules, budgets, and quality requirements are met
    • Provide on-the-job training to staff
    • Communicating the engagement status with the client on a timely and ongoing basis
  • Client Development
    • Assist partner group with development of new revenue-generating services
    • Develop new client contacts through referrals and civic activities
  • Technical Skills
    • Attending Continuing Professional Education (CPE) seminars as agreed upon with partner group
  • Firm Administration and Client Service
    • Adhering to the office administration and billing policies, including entering time into the timekeeping system within the timing specified, reviewing and issuing bills on time, and collecting outstanding client receivables for his/her clients
    • Research on complex transactions
    • Research and communicate new accounting, auditing, and tax regulations
    • Problem identification and problem-solving
    • Participating in staff training/mentoring, working closely with junior staff to ensure they attain the CPE/training they need for advancement
    • Works to develop responsible, trained staff by assisting in performance evaluations
    • Perform initial detail review of other projects on behalf of partners
    • Normally perform all duties as those of a partner except hiring

Skills and Education Required

The skills and education required for this position are:

  • Current and valid CPA license and in good standing with AICPA
  • Minimum of 5+ years of experience in public accounting with 4 years experience preferred managing people within a professional services firm or other equivalent experience
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good research skills
  • Positive, can-do demeanor with the willingness to “dig in” and get the work done
  • Excellent understanding, comprehension, and ability to articulate auditing, accounting, and tax concepts
  • Strong leadership, project management, and team-building skills
  • Proficiency in use of computers, computer accounting software, and tax software programs

Measures of Success

During the first 2 year period, the Tax Manager will be deemed to have been successful when he/she has:

  • Completed the engagements assigned to him/her
  • Received positive feedback from his/her clients and partner group
  • Exhibited the actions and positive attitude in participation in the other aspects of firm administration and client service as articulated above
  • Developed his/her own referrals from satisfied clients and their advisors
  • Participated in the firm’s strategic planning
  • Interviewed individual tax clients, either from his/her own referrals or as assigned by the partner group
