Harvest Tide Organics is medium-scale produce farm located in Bowdoinham, Maine that markets vegetables through a pre-boxed, delivered CSA, wholesale partners, and our in-town farm stand. We grow on approximately 20 acres of fertile, flat, alluvial soil along the Kennebec River and Merrymeeting Bay in a tight knit community of other small vegetable and fruit growers. Our farm is certified organic by MOFGA and believes strongly in the value of organic and sustainable means of vegetable production. We grow a wide array of vegetables and also partner with other farms for distribution. We have a seasonal and year-round staff that ranges from 8 - about 18. We pride ourselves on creating a great work environment and providing upward growth for committed staff.

Tentative Start Date: Flexible Start date of May 22/29th 2023

Hours: Mon-Friday 6:00/7:00 AM through 4:00 PM - Guaranteed 40 hours per week with possibly up to 45. weekly This is a seasonal position with lots of potential to expand to year-round. Daily work includes a 15 minute paid morning break and a 30 minute unpaid lunch.

Description:

This is a starting level position. Farm field workers can expect to both learn about and be part of many critical operations on the farm. As a medium-sized farm, we can offer advancement and more responsibility to the right candidates who show thoughtful engagement with the work, dedication, and a team approach. While the position is seasonal for many folks, we offer year-round work to all staff who commit to working a second season. We encourage those applying to consider this possibility for a year-round position.

Position start date is flexible and can start as early as 5/15/23, and is full time through Thanksgiving. Later start dates are available, but all workers are expected to complete the season to Christmas.

Our schedule and workload vary by season, but field employees can expect the season to loosely follow these seasons:

Spring: Field clean-up and prep, plantings, infrastructure projects, training, getting to know the staff and physical requirements/expectations of the job, learning about field plans and locations

Summer: Harvesting, transplanting, weeding, mowing,weeding, wash and pack of produce, packout and distribution begin, hours are longer, days are hotter

Fall: Most of summer activities, large scale bulk harvest, winter prep, fall planting, distribution slows starting October,

All seasons will include some work washing and packing vegetables. All employees will participate in the packing of shares for each delivery.

What we look for in applicants:

  • Commitment to reliability and punctuality
  • Capable of heavy physical work in all weather conditions, cold/heat/rain etc.
  • Employees must be comfortable working at a quick pace, even while working alone
  • 1-2 seasons working on a commercial farm strongly preferred, but we are willing to train hard-working folk with experience in manual labor
  • Ability to follow schedules, read instructions, and do basic math.
  • Ability to follow food safety and organic protocol with close attention
  • Commitment to professional and constructive communication with co-workers, employers, and other staff
  • Sense of humor, ability to roll-with-it, and a good attitude

Hours: 40-45 hours per week. 6:00 or 7:00 AM until 3:30 or 4:30 PM Monday - Friday. Lunch is an unpaid ½ hour, and employees can expect a paid 15 minute break mid-morning.

Season: Mid-April - Mid-May agreed-upon start date through -- December (it is expected that all employees complete the season). Year-round opportunities available for those staying a second season.

Pay: Starting pay $16.95/hr. More with demonstrated farm experience and tractor operation experience.
