Faculty Member, General Studies Job at Olivet Nazarene University
POSITION SUMMARY
A qualified candidate is sought to fill a full-time teaching position in the General Studies Department beginning in the Fall of 2023. Rank assignment is negotiable, depending on experience.
The Department of General Studies exists to help undergraduate students transition to university-level curriculum, set academic and life goals, and develop academic skills and attitudes required for personal and professional success. General Studies courses and peer-programming are designed to come alongside students to foster confidence and competence across all areas of study.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Teaching multiple courses in academic functioning and executive functioning.
2. Administration of the online Multi-Disciplinary Studies program. This will include, but not limited to tasks, such as:
a. Managing a departmental budget.
b. Completing departmental reports, including faculty reviews, program assessments, and proposals for academic programming.
c. Collaborating with faculty and staff throughout campus.
d. Establishing and enforcing policy that merges needs for both online and traditional students.
e. Creating advising standards for the MDS program and communicating those to the online advisors.
3. Advising students seeking to decide on a major.
4. Advising students in need of academic improvement.
5. Serving in the Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) and collaborating with other faculty/staff to implement the CAE mission and vision.
6. Develop curriculum based on researched best-practices. Course development will be for courses that help students acquire and master academic behaviors and skills for success in classes across the curriculum.
7. Meeting with prospective students and their families, specifically students still exploring areas of study for their academic major/minor.
8. Serving on committees that focus on students’ transition to college, academic development, and academic persistence and success.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Academic advising of undecided students and students seeking assistance with issues related to persistence.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIRED

2. Ability to combine educational background, professional practice experience, relevant teaching experience, and a commitment to the Christian faith.
3. Flexibility and creativity to help reshape and build a departmental culture of celebrating academic progress and success.
4. Strong organization and communication skills that will assist in forming and leading interdisciplinary committees and programming across campus.
5. Experience working with students of varying academic abilities, specifically students who struggle with academic behaviors and skills.
6. Experience advising students who have not declared a major area of study and/or are deciding between multiple areas and need assistance creating an interdisciplinary academic plan.
7. Professional development and/or experience in the areas of academic success, persistence, and/or first-year programming.
8. Strong desire to continue researching and developing in practices related to helping students transition and adjust to undergraduate expectations.
9. Ability to set boundaries with students and have difficult conversations about necessary life changes in a way that demonstrates compassion.
EDUCATION
A Master’s degree is required in an area relevant to instruction (Education, Special Education, Social Work, Psychology or related field). A Doctorate, or near completion, is preferred and may be negotiated as a commitment of employment with the university.
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This position is a full-time faculty contract for 9 months, with the understanding that responsibilities to cover summer orientation assistance, academic advising, and/or hiring of adjuncts to cover classes may require some work during the summer months.
Salary commensurate with experience. Office located on the main campus of Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais, Illinois.
