Faculty Instructor Adjunct/Humanities

The Humanities Division of the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown is seeking candidates for an adjunct faculty position directing our undergraduate Jazz Band. The successful applicant will be well qualified to teach courses in performative band music to a diverse student population. The start date for these positions is August 2023. Duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to 1. adapting a standard course syllabus for Jazz Ensemble in accordance with UPJ standards and guidelines provided by the Humanities Chair; 2. guiding college students in well-prepared, appropriately designed, carefully focused performative sessions that emphasize jazz music before a live audience 3. demonstrating instrumental conducting and program management skills and strong ability as a performer, along with experience teaching music history, music theory and applied music areas including brass, woodwinds, and percussion; 4. leading all rehearsals and conduct all scheduled concerts; 5. demonstrating an ability to model a variety of musical styles and genres for a Jazz Ensemble; 6. motivating students in the classroom/studio and beyond; 7. Showing a willingness to continue to learn new music and current trends; 8. demonstrating experience in recruiting new students and the ability to work effectively with faculty, students, and colleagues; 9. showing a commitment to academic excellence, and successful; 10. maintaining attendance, scholastic, and personnel records and submitting them according to published deadlines; 11. adhering to all university policy (s) or standards and norms.

Education/Experience: The applicant must possess one of the following qualifications (earned degrees must be from an accredited college/university): 1. Either a Master of Fine Arts in Music or a Master’s degree in either Music or Music Education. Preferred qualifications include Demonstrated commitment to student learning and to the success of all students in the open-access learning environment of a community college; 2. Demonstrated sensitivity to issues of diversity, and ability to motivate and teach community college students of diverse ethnic and racial backgrounds, sexual orientations, genders, cultures, and learning styles, as well as students with disabilities or varied levels of academic preparation; 3. Training and/or experience in conducting and directing concert bands and jazz ensembles 4. Commitment to innovation and improvement of teaching, and interest in building a strong music program; 5. Commitment to professional and personal growth; 6. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a small campus setting that requires involvement and responsibilities from each member; 7. Strong interpersonal skills and collaborative spirit; 8. Recent experience teaching college-level or secondary education level courses; 9. Evidence of teaching effectiveness.
