JOB TITLE: Exercise Physiologist- Clinical Services
DEPARTMENT: Clinical Services
GENERAL SUMMARY OF DUTIES: This non-exempt position is to develop, coordinate and implement exercise related programs including marketing, research, and internships. Provide exercise-related education for patients. Responsible for all exercise science standards needed to meet regulatory and credentialing requirements.

TYPICAL PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Requires prolonged sitting, some bending, stooping and stretching. Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate a keyboard, photocopier, telephone, calculator and other office equipment. Requires normal range of hearing and eyesight to record, prepare and communicate appropriate reports. Occasional stress from varying demands. Must be able to work independently. Must be able to lift/carry up to 50 pounds.

TYPICAL WORKING CONDITIONS: Work is performed in a busy office environment. Frequent contact with employees, patients, physicians and outside agencies. Occasional evening or weekend work.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
  • At all times greets patients, families, and visitors in a courteous, respectful and professional manner. Demonstrates empathy and positive interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrates ability to gather necessary patient information for non-invasive cardiac testing, including review of history/physical, consults, and associated testing.
  • Demonstrates expertise in clinical assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation of patients undergoing non-invasive cardiac testing, cardiac nuclear imaging, and other cardiology procedures.
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate patient appointments and modify according to patient and/of department needs.
  • Able to provide patients with cardiac stress testing preparation instructions.
  • Monitor patient 12 lead EKG, blood pressure, oxygen saturation, and symptoms during cardiac stress testing.
  • Determine appropriate termination time of test. Determine if necessary to terminate test early due to patient EKG, symptoms, and safety.
  • Create, demonstrate and explain custom exercise plans and correct use of aerobic and strength training equipment for heart failure patients referred and cleared for exercise prescription.
  • Provides timely, concise verbal and/or written documentation concerning procedures and patient care.
  • Ensures documentation generated for cardiac procedures is complete, accurate and routed to the appropriate areas in a timely manner.
  • Orders materials and supplies and calibrates equipment as needed.
  • Must have clinical knowledge disease management programming multiple co-morbidities.
  • Recognize symptom changes/signs of medical emergencies and knows the appropriate medical response and processes.
  • Initiates first responder care.
  • Active in program certification process and regulatory agency review according to work site.
  • Lead Process Improvement initiatives and benchmark responsibilities for program changes.
  • Implement processes to ensure compliance with state, national and organizational safety requirement, and takes responsibility for program compliance issues.
  • Adheres to AHI policies an standards of practice.

PERFORMANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
  • Knows and understands principles of cardiac anatomy and physiology.
  • Knows and has a high level of professionalism and knowledge of exercise programming and exercise machines.
  • Knows and understands principles of non-invasive cardiac testing, cardiac nuclear imaging, cardioversions, and conscious sedation.
  • Ability to provide high quality care in cardiac stress testing in the forms of Exercise Tolerance Test (12-lead EDG only), Stress Echocardiogram, Nuclear Cardiolite Exercise Stress Tests, Nuclear Cadiolite Pharmacological Stress Tests, PET Pharmacological Stress Tests and MRI pharmacological Stress Tests.
  • Knows and understand related indicators for cardiac stress testing and other cardiology procedures.
  • Knows and understands physiological contraindications for exercise cardiac stress testing.
  • Knows and understands related diseases, risk factors, and benefits of non-invasive cardiac testing, nuclear imaging, and other cardiology procedures.
  • Knows and understands the pharmacological stress agents: mechanisms of action, indications, contraindications, and reasons to stop a test.
  • Knowledgeable and experienced in patient assessment and treatment options.
  • Knows and has current BLS and ACLS certifications and attend continuing education events.
  • Must have strong EKG interpretation skills as well as knowledge to assess and treat EKG rhythms.
  • Knowledge of an ability to assess and treat comorbidity conditions such as diabetes, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, congestive heart failure, asthma, hypertension, and hypotension.
  • Knowledge and ability to implement standing orders with imaging RN collaboration.
  • Knows and has the ability to operate medical machinery such as 12-lead EKG monitoring and stress systems, resting 12-lead EKG machines, oximetry and blood pressure cuffs.
  • Ability to measure oxygen consumption and lung functioning, using spirometer.
  • Ability to measure amount of body fat using such equipment as skinfold calipers and tape measure for waist to hip ratio.
  • Must have strong communication and motivational skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree (minimum), or Master’s degree (preferred), in Exercise Physiology or related field.
Experience: Two years of clinical or exercise physiology related experience, training and/or education.
Licensing: ACSM - Clinical Exercise Specialist or Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist; AACVPR – Certified Cardiac Rehab Professional.
Certifications: Active ACLS and BLS required; Current certification in the field of exercise physiology.
