Job Summary

The Eastern Queens Alliance, a 501(c)3 organization in Southeast Queens, has as a major emphasis environmental initiatives including environmental education, environmental justice, preservation and development of open space with an emphasis on Idlewild Park Preserve, a part of the Jamaica Bay System. This position is an integral part of this area of emphasis. The Environmental Education Instructor works closely with others on the team maintaining, developing, coordinating, implementing and promoting our environmental education program.

Responsibilities and Duties

Environmental Education Instructor Duties: In consultation with the Project Manager, the Environmental Education Instructor will be responsible for the formulation, outreach, planning and implementation of the environmental education program. The position will include the following tasks:

· Plan, adapt, develop, compile and teach curricula for hands-on environmental education workshops and fieldtrips with a focus on estuaries, salt/freshwater wetland ecosystems (Workshops take place in local schools , virtually, and in Idlewild Nature Center Park.);

· Assist with necessary outreach and scheduling as well as implementation of workshops (virtual and in-school), fieldtrips and tours of Idlewild;

· Keep records of environmental education project activities.

· Assist with the oversight of the maintenance of the live animal exhibit and enhance workshops through incorporation of use of live animal exhibit in lessons.

· Other: Contribute to the writing and publishing of EQA's quarterly newsletter, Sustainable Southeast Queens

Qualifications and Skills

B.S/B.A. or M.S. in Environmental Science, Biology, ecology, environmental science education or related field with concentrations in Science Education. Preference given to those with post-graduate degree in environmental education along with strong desire to build and teach an environmental science curriculum in a non-formal setting. Must have strong organizational, interpersonal, oral and written communication skills, including general and technical writing ability, and high level of self-motivation, enthusiasm, flexibility and initiative. He/she must be willing to work in a small, non-profit environment with a vigorous focus on growth and expansion of its environmental education initiatives. Preference given to those with prior experience successfully teaching environmental science in non-formal education environments.

Job Type: Part-Time--25-30 hours per week; Full-time--40 hours per week; Per diem--On call on an as needed basis.

Salary/Wages: $20.00 per hour
