The Position

The Episcopal Academy seeks a new English Department Chair to lead our vibrant and dynamic department. The English Department Chair is a key member of the school's academic leadership, with oversight of teaching and learning in English for grades 6-12. The department chair leads decision-making related to curriculum and instruction; ensures excellence in professional practices; and fosters a culture of growth, reflection, and continual improvement in the department. The department chair does have teaching responsibilities, though their teaching assignments are reduced to provide the time to do the important work of leading a team.

A school of over 1300 students in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, of which 30% identify as students of color, Episcopal takes a holistic approach to educating all students in mind, body, and spirit. Grounded in The Stripes, our curriculum is designed to enable students to lead lives of purpose, faith, and integrity. About You

The ideal candidate for this role will lead our English department's efforts to achieve the following objectives:

• The department's 6-12 curriculum is thoughtfully and rigorously designed and sequenced, incorporating multiple perspectives and voices so that all students can see themselves in the curriculum.
• Department members regularly think about, reflect on, and have conversations about classroom pedagogy and instructional methods.
• Department practices related to assessing student learning are regularly discussed, analyzed and revised to enhance learning and ensure alignment with departmental standards.
• All teachers are working to grow in their craft, and chairs encourage and support the professional development of each department member. The department chair models a culture of improvement through engagement with the Center for Teaching and Learning, and by otherwise pursuing professional growth opportunities.
• By networking with educators inside and outside the school, the chair keeps current and is informed and curious about national and global trends and research in the discipline.
• The department chair models consistently high standards and adherence to school policies and protocols.
• The department chair works collaboratively with the academic dean, division head, and other administrators to execute the teacher evaluation system and ensure that student learning experiences are of the highest quality.
• Department operations (including budgeting, student placement, and teacher course assignments) are executed with timeliness, clarity, competence, and strategic thinking.
