Engineer Trainee (Electrical)*, NS-18:
Applicants must have a qualifying*** bachelor’s degree or higher, OR proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE) and at least one year of full-time engineering experience in electrical systems.

Assistant Engineer (Electrical), Grade 20:
Applicants must have proof of passing the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES) Fundamentals of Engineering Examination (FE), AND either: a qualifying*** bachelor’s degree or higher OR at least one year of full-time engineering experience in electrical systems.

  • Upon successful completion of at least one year of the traineeship and passing the FE exam, trainees may be advanced to the Assistant Engineer (Electrical), Grade 20. Trainees who do not obtain their FE by the end of the two-year traineeship will be removed from the Trainee position.

Duties Description
The Assistant Engineer (Electrical), Grade 20, will work in the Long Island Office (LIO), primarily fulfilling the responsibilities of LIO in accordance with the Long Island Power Authority (LIPA) Reform Act and will also work with the Department’s Office of Electric, Gas, and Water (OEGW). Duties include, but are not limited to:
  • Assisting senior staff in fulfilling responsibilities in accordance with the LIPA Reform Act.
  • Assisting with the review of the Utility 2.0 filings and identifying any related issues.
  • Assisting with the review of utilities’ drawings in compliance with the National Electrical Safety Code (NESC).
  • Assisting with the review of performance metrics and developing of the proposals for new metrics.
  • Inspecting/auditing utility facilities and testing processes to determine if the utilities are properly maintaining their systems and are in compliance with electric safety standards.
  • Investigating electric system failures and complaints to ensure system safety and reliability.
  • Assisting with the review of utility performance metrics related to Transmission and Distribution (T&D), Power Supply, and Clean Energy.
  • Reviewing utility preparedness to reliably meet projected system summer peak loads.
  • Providing support in the review of utilities’ capital and operation and maintenance (O&M) budget, including their monthly capital expenditure variance reports.
  • Monitoring utility storm preparedness and response activities including conducting field visits during storm events.
  • Providing engineering analysis for rate proceedings.
  • Preparing staff positions through memoranda, testimony, and exhibits.
  • Providing engineering analysis and input to support achievement of the State’s clean energy goals in a reliable and cost-effective manner.
