About the Work Unit
The Region 4 Traffic Engineering Unit improves traffic safety, efficiency, capacity, and operation of highways for the traveling public as well as construction and maintenance workers by ensuring the appropriate design of traffic control devices for highway construction and permanent installation.
About the Position
The Professional Engineer position will apply and implement engineering theories, principles, and standards and lead Local Agency projects. This position will serve as the project manager to oversee the development of roadway construction plans, complex design details, specifications, and detailed cost estimates for local agency projects. The Professional Engineer will also provides technical information to CDOT specialty branches and outside municipalities and ensures that departmental policy, procedures and design standards are addressed and incorporated into roadway construction plans.
This position works as a project manager responsible for ensuring that the highway project is built in accordance with the plans and specifications thus providing a safe and adequate highway system.
Major duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Interact with Local Agencies and other non-CDOT Organizations as they develop projects;- Preside as a lead worker over Local Agency design planning, design and construction review meetings;
- Perform conformance oversight duties on Local Agency projects as well as manage selected CDOT traffic projects;
- Review and compile documentation that reports quantities of work performed to assure the contractual acceptability of work is in accordance to the plans;
- Review the work of Local Agencies involved in contract administration of Federal-Aid projects for compliance with appropriate regulation;
- Prepare and approve payments to the contractor by making thorough measurements of quantities, calculating quantities from verified field data;
- Prepare legal documents certifying that work has been completed and accepted by Federal, State and Local standards; check, and approve invoices submitted by local agencies;
- Attend the preconstruction meetings and construction audits;
- Deliver projects within prescribed budgets;
- Facilitate creation of Intergovenmental Agreements, special use and other appropriate agreements between CDOT and Local Agencies;
- Other job duties as assigned.
- Primarily 8:00 am – 5:00 pm work hours, Monday-Friday
- Approximately 20% spent in the field, 80% spent in the office
- Travel required during work hours to attend project meetings, and meet with local agency partners
- Required to operate CDOT vehicles
Minimum Qualifications
- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from the Colorado State Board of Licensure for Architects, Professional Engineers, and Professional Land Surveyors.
OR- Current, valid licensure as a Professional Engineer from another U.S. state's Board of Licensure. If meeting qualifications with an out-of-state PE license, it would be a condition of employment to obtain your Colorado PE license within six months of hire
Conditions of Employment
- If you have a current valid PE license from a state other than Colorado, you must obtain a Colorado PE license within 6 months of hire as a condition of employment.

- A current valid driver's license is required for all Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) positions which require operating a state or personal motor vehicle to perform one or more essential functions of the position.
The exceptional applicant will possess the proven ability or accomplishment in the following:
- Demonstrated success with the duties listed in the Description of the Job section;
- Years of State service experience related to the duties of this position;
- Fluency with the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), CDOT Local Agency desk reference, CDOT specifications, CDOT design manuals, CDOT field materials manual, and CDOT construction manual;
- Highest work/personal ethics and integrity;
- Maintaining current working knowledge of engineering best practices, CDOT procedures, regulations, specifications and policies related to area of responsibility and to the broad range of engineering specialty areas at CDOT;
- Depth and breadth of construction and/or design engineering experience;
- Passion for safety;
- Excellent time and project management skills and experience;
- Experience working with multiple and diverse stakeholders, with sensitivity to their needs and priorities;
- Ability to take initiative to solve problems in an innovative manner; self-starter;
