Under general supervision is responsible for installation, operation, maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting and repairs of utility distribution and production plant electronic and instrumentation equipment including but not limited to electric, steam, chilled water and water metering, communications, protection and control systems, instrumentation, utility network administration and security.

What you’ll do:

  • Determines jobsite work sequences and safety procedures required, procures materials, coordinates outages, completes work, places systems back into service.
  • Perform and document pre-job hazard assessment and provide pre-job briefs as needed.
  • Interprets and maintains wiring diagrams, schematics, updates system logs, drawings and documentation on utility systems.
  • Assists with troubleshooting and maintenance of program logic controller (PLC) based auxiliary systems.
  • Designs and implements control system changes or new control schemes and advises utility staff of changes.
  • Installs and configures new modules, control stations, firmware and software revisions for the utility computer-based control systems.
  • Monitors system performance, using system interfaces, and makes recommendations for system improvements.
  • Provides functional supervision including training

What you bring:

  • Bachelors or Associate’s (AAS) degree in Automation & Instrumentation (A&I) or Electronics Engineering Technology (EET).
  • Other/similar technical programs of study may be considered.
  • In lieu of AAS degree, 6+ years of direct work experience with industrial automation and controls may be considered.
  • High School Degree or GED equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s degree in Automation, Electronics, Instrumentation, or other Engineering Technology discipline.
  • An AAS degree with 2+ years of experience working in industrial automation and controls.
  • Military experience/training.
  • 6+ years’ relevant experience and/or training; licenses, endorsements or an equivalent combination of education and experience required.
  • 4+ years of that experience in utility systems, industrial, process or power plants or 2+ years’ experience in electrical and electronic instrumentation and graduation from a two-year electrical or instrumentation and control program is required.
  • 2+year MS Server and 3+ years supporting multilayer switches in an industrial environment.
  • Experience working with a CMMS (Computer Maintenance Management System) preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical and electrical safety as well as experience implementing OSHA job site requirements.
  • Knowledge of utility systems and equipment.
  • Knowledge of tools and methods necessary to troubleshoot and maintain electrical and electronic utility equipment.
  • Knowledge of the principles, methods, and techniques used in the electrical, electronics, instrumentation and control, and network administration trades.
  • Knowledge of the trade occupational hazards and safety precautions while working in confined spaces, aerial or elevated locations, extreme temperatures, excavations, +and other environmental caused conditions.
  • Knowledge of electrical codes, utility standards, and safety programs as governed by rules, regulations and guidelines of local, state, and national electrical and safety codes, equipment manufacturers and others.
  • Skill in calibrating utility instrumentation.
  • Knowledge of high-level programming concepts such as objects, functions, routines, data types, tag naming conventions and be to code and run simple PLC programs.
  • Experience in installation and configuration of control system hardware and software.
  • Knowledge of network architectures and Ethernet networks using routers and switches. Understand the variations in platform protocols and understand the role of protocol layers in data networks.

  • Capable of performing repetitive motions as required.
  • Required to have eyesight corrected at 20/40 to accurately read and interpret such as but not limited to instruments, gauges, and manuals.
  • Must be physically capable of entering and working in a confined space (crawl spaces, shafts, small enclosed areas, pipes and the like) as required.
  • Must be physically capable of wearing protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to half and full-face respirators, fall protection equipment, hardhat, safety shoes, safety glasses, etc.
  • Ability to perform basic math computations.
  • Ability to maintain records and system documentation.
  • Ability to read and understand blueprints, schematics, control system drawings and repair manuals.
  • Ability to perform problem decomposition and stepwise refinement in problem solving.
  • Ability to analyze system problems, recommend and implement system changes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing with other department personnel, vendors and suppliers, students, staff, and the general public.
  • Ability to train and instruct.
  • Ability to meet highest attendance requirements
  • Ability to handle multiple assignments on a timely basis with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Ability to use personal computer, calculator, and work with standard software applications.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate
  • The position consists of both indoors (85%) and outdoors (15%) work with exposure to inclement weather
  • Could involve some lifting / up to 50 lbs.
