Position Summary

The National Council seeks a skilled and seasoned Editor who will work with the Marketing and Communications team ensure fidelity to the National Council brand, mission and style; accuracy; precision in language; and consistency as well as create content that speaks to multiple audiences.

The editorial department at the National Council is an integral part of the Marketing and Communications team, and we seek a person who views editing as part of the creative process and will work with other teams to create material that is not only correct but exceeds expectations. Editorial’s contributions to help produce compelling marketing emails are just as important as they are to research-based white papers and require the same commitment.

The successful applicant will be a strong editor whose proven experience includes simple copyediting, proofreading and substantive editing, and who demonstrates flexibility and decision-making skills to adapt to a rapidly-evolving environment. This person must be able to comfortably adapt to the demands of technical and instructional content written for a lay audience as well as crisp and compelling marketing and educational material with understanding of the range of writing styles required.

This position requires collaboration with the breadth of departments and programs that comprise the National Council, but primarily with the Marketing and Communications team. As such, the ability to adapt seamlessly to different communication styles and audiences is required.

The ideal candidate will be positive, self-motivated, detail-oriented and possess a passion for mental wellbeing and ensuring that high-quality care for mental health and substance use challenges is available to all those in need. Must be comfortable working in a highly collaborative and fast-paced environment.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain assignment calendars and ensure equity in workloads
  • Update and implement uniform style for educational and promotional materials
  • Edit a breadth of materials including, but not limited to, email marketing for internal and external audiences, blogs, newsletters, fact sheets, one-pagers, toolkits, white papers, manuals, technical documents, educational support materials, presentation materials and multiple levels of curriculum
  • Copyedit, proofread and provide substantive editing for print and online communications in adherence with National Council and AP Style guidelines
  • Effectively communicate with and educate team members on writing and editing choices.
  • Work independently and as part of a team, managing multiple projects, communicating expectations and meeting rigorous deadlines
  • Adapt to quickly changing workflows while managing many projects and deadlines simultaneously

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of professional editing experience
  • Organized, focused and detail- and deadline-oriented
  • Familiarity with mental health, substance use and health care preferred
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • Experience in marketing and communications
  • Familiarity with AP Style and APA Style for citations
  • Collaborative/teamwork attitude and skills a must
  • Experience in writing/editing education and curriculum preferred
  • Experience as a technical or medical writer/editor or experience is preferred
