Early Childhood Behavior Specialist Job at Gaston County Schools
Definition:
The Early Childhood Behavior Specialist participates as a key member of a multi-disciplinary team in the education of young children with challenging behaviors and/or emotional, behavioral, and learning disabilities. In conjunction with the preschool education team, she/he develops and implements individualized behavioral plans for children (ages 3-5) to help them build skills; provides coaching and modeling to staff to ensure that all supports are followed; provides 1:1 support to children to help them stabilize and increase their success in an early childhood classroom. The Behavior Specialist tracks and monitors data on children’s progress to help inform education planning. The Behavior Specialist’s goal is to enhance children’s social, emotional, and behavioral functioning. Knowledge of The Pyramid Model: A Community Practice Model for Young Children’s Social-Emotional Development is preferred. The behavior specialist reports directly to the Pre-K Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Oversee the planning and implementation of age-appropriate Inclusion Support Plans at a site level.
- Maintain the safety of children in all situations through the use of supervision and the implementation of various techniques.
- Conduct observations of children in various settings to gather information on the functions of behavior.
- Collect and analyze data related to children’s functioning to inform planning.
- Demonstrate techniques that enhance problem-solving abilities and enable emotional and social growth.
- Coach teachers on intervention techniques.
- Understand and relay relevant information to the team.
- Support teachers to record and document critical information in a timely matter using the Behavior Incident Reporting System and other tools.
- Work with administrators to follow legal guidelines on Preschool Discipline Reporting.
- Interact with children in a positive, nurturing, therapeutic manner.
- Work with the teachers to ensure that all learning plans include individualized support for children with challenging behaviors or disabilities.
- Monitor children’s progress to ensure activities are meeting the student's educational and developmental needs.
- Provide guidance and assistance to staff in the delivery of high-quality programs and services.
- Assist in planning and providing effective staff development activities.
- Prioritize the needs of teachers and develops credible and trusting relationships.
- Demonstrates diplomacy by approaching others about sensitive issues in non-threatening ways and fosters an environment conducive to open and transparent communication.
- Attends training, and seminars, and does research to keep up with the latest information and best practices within the field.
- Understanding of current theory and practices of child development and best practices for children.
- Knowledge of special education and related services.
- Knowledge of The Pyramid Model and other practices to address children’s challenging behaviors.
- Knowledge of the Individualized Education Program process.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk or hear. The employee occasionally is required to sit and stoop, kneel, or crouch.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Must be able to perform light work exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or up 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess the visual acuity to prepare data, work with record processes, and do extensive reading and research.
Minimum Qualifications/Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree in Early Childhood or related field, Birth-Kindergarten or Special Education license
- Five (5) or more years of related experience as an early childhood professional. (Equivalent combination of education and experience considered.)
This is a full-time, 10-month position
