The Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection (MassDEP) is the state agency responsible for ensuring clean air and water, the safe management of toxics and hazards, the recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, the timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.


Proposed Duration:

Winter Program 2023 January - April


Because MassDEP is presently working remotely, candidates will work remotely, until staff return to the office. Candidates will need a computer with Windows 10 and Office suite and will be expected to work on their own computers. Candidates will also need to have internet access as a Virtual Private Network (VPN) connection may be provided.

Project Description

The intern will assist Drinking Water Program staff with project tasks that support the goals of the Safe Drinking Water Act.


Description of Internship Duties

  • Assist with updating MassDEP’s Surface Water Supply Protection Plan guidance document.
  • Assist in developing outreach material for lead services lines and lead plumbing materials.
  • Assist in outreach for attracting applicants from a diverse background for certified operator entry level training opportunities.
  • Participate in staff meetings.
  • Assist with other Drinking Water Program tasks including data entry and research.

Knowledge Requested


Course work in environmental sciences, community planning, geography or earth science. Good writing and research skills.

This is an intern contracted position for up to 22.5 hours per week


$21.00 an hour/undergrad degree


$26.00 an hour/graduate degree


Employees must have the ability to commute to MassDEP Massachusetts locations.
