POSITION TITLE: Division Director of Sciences and Biology Faculty Member

DEPARTMENT: Division of Sciences, College of Arts, Sciences, and Business

POSITION STATUS: Full-time (10-month)

POSITION REPORTS TO: Dean

JOB SUMMARY: With consultation of the Dean, the Division Director of Sciences and Biology Faculty Member is responsible for providing effective leadership of division programming and personnel, instruction of biology courses, and advising and curricular initiatives of the program. This is a full-time faculty position.

Division Director of Sciences Essential Functions:

Leadership of the Division

Provides effective leadership in curriculum development, implementation and evaluation

  • Adheres to teaching, service, scholarship and other responsibilities identified in the employee handbook
  • Oversees accuracy and submission to the Dean of the course schedule of classes and syllabi of classes taught consistent with USF guidelines, content map, and the catalog description
  • Guides curriculum review and ongoing development
  • Provides leadership in guiding the division in assessing student academic achievement and other areas of instructional effectiveness
  • Provides effective leadership in development and implementation of the division’s mission and vision for improvement
  • Leads strategic planning process for the division
  • Provides leadership to the division in maintaining/attaining programmatic accreditation standards through planning, preparation and evaluation activities
  • Prepares division reports/analyses as requested

Provides effective leadership for the division and faculty:

  • Effectively manages the ongoing operational, financial and personnel activities of the division
  • Oversees division budget and collaborates on corollary budgets
  • Manages contractual agreements with other agencies and institutions
  • Oversees the hiring of division staff and faculty members
  • Leads faculty in adapting to changes in programs, divisions, colleges, and the university
  • Initiates strategies to promote effective division teamwork and positive morale
  • Evaluates division faculty and staff objectively and fairly
  • Mentors and supports faculty in the teaching role, professional development and scholarly activities
  • Develops, administers, and maintains division records, policies and procedures; participates in the policy-making process relative to general university policies
  • Provides leadership to the division in development and implementation of the vision for growth and expansion and in the preparation of annual and long-range action plans
  • Performs academic program responsibilities in absence of a program director in the division

Provides effective communication:

  • Encourages communication and collaboration among faculty and through regularly conducted division meetings
  • Serves as the contact point within the division, between university divisions, and with stakeholders
  • Serves as an advocate for division faculty
  • Clearly communicates needs with division staff
  • Effectively communicates division issues to the dean
  • Manages conflicts and addressing division issues in a timely manner

Leadership of Students, Alumni, and in the Community

  • Works effectively with students and faculty to resolve student issues and concerns
  • Works closely with the dean and the alumni division to support alumni activities
  • Works under the direction of the dean to establish and maintain effective communication with all communities of interest
  • Provides effective leadership in oversight of student recruitment and retention responsibilities

Leadership within the College

  • Actively participates in the college leadership council
  • Exhibits strong team skills to accomplish the college mission and vision
  • Participates in strategic planning within the college and the university
  • Makes recommendations to dean regarding the college strategic plan, budget, SWOT, situation analysis, enrollment management, evaluation, annual action plan, committee structure, curriculum, faculty, students, quality standards, and community relations
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the dean

Biology Faculty Member Major Responsibilities/Activities

  • Adheres to all university academic and employment policies identified in the Employee and Faculty handbooks and academic catalogs
  • Participates in recruitment, retention, and development efforts in coordination with division members and/or Enrollment Services
  • Fulfills full-time contracted teaching load as defined by the faculty handbook
  • Participates in program reviews
  • Engages in Scholarship as defined by the Boyer Model, including, but not limited to activities identified in the faculty handbook
  • Respects the moral and religious beliefs of the university and students; uses discretion when expressing personal beliefs and views
  • Attends college, division, program, and university meetings as requested
  • Initiates and manages community partnerships
  • Performs other duties as assigned by the Program Director, Division Director or college Dean

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Master’s degree in an area of biology; terminal degree in a science-related field required.

Experience

  • Evidence of successful teaching at the post-secondary level

Knowledge and Skills

  • Demonstrates competence in educational principles, instructional methods, evaluation techniques and technology used in higher education classrooms, laboratory and clinical settings
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the profession including theory and practice, procedures, and regulations
  • Demonstrates proficiency in interpersonal and communication skills (verbal, written and electronic) necessary to interact effectively with students, faculty, professional staff, administration, clinical affiliates, and the community
  • Demonstrates skill in goal setting, budget management, and team building
  • Demonstrates analytical and organizational skills to plan, implement, and evaluate division activities
  • Demonstrates high motivation and independent initiative
  • Demonstrates honesty and loyalty to the University and support its mission and religious affiliation
  • Demonstrates ability to coordinate services to the needs of diverse populations within the time and financial limits of the institution.
  • Must be willing to work irregular, and sometimes long hours, including weekends and university breaks
