Must be able to work occasional unscheduled overtime, weekends, holidays, and during times the college is closed due to inclement weather or other unusual occurrences.
The NOVA Police Department is established as a college-wide entity with the responsibility to maintain the safety and security of all employees, students and visitors, and property owned or controlled by the College. As such, all police department employees are subject to short-term and long-term reassignments that may include different locations, rotating schedules, and duties depending on the needs of the department and/or staff professional development.
Duties and Tasks:
- This position is responsible for performing a variety of communications and operational tasks in support of public safety, law enforcement, and security operations, linking those in need of assistance to those who render assistance.
Essential Functions:
- Operate police/emergency communications equipment in accordance with existing guidelines.
- Process requests for service by telephone and in person.
- Maintain computerized daily communications logs.
- May be required to perform other duties as assigned.
- May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.

- Ability to successfully complete initial DCJS approved Dispatcher/Communications Training;
- Ability to successfully complete Departmental Field Training;
- Ability to acquire and maintain NCIC/VCIN Level A operator certification;
- Ability to successfully complete Departmentally required or DCJS required In-Service Training.
- Ability to follow instructions and perform with minimum supervision;
- Ability to understand and speak English clearly;
- Excellent oral (no speech limitations) and written communication skills;
- Ability to multi-task various job functions;
- Ability to handle stress under emergency situations;
- Good computer skills
- Ability to type 30-35 words per minute.
- Ability to successfully complete the written telecommunicator assessment.
- Possess a good geographical knowledge of the six NVCC Campuses including surrounding roadways
Minimum Qualifications:
- Successful completion of the written tele-communicator assessment
- 18 years of age
- No criminal record.
- Must be a United States citizen or have been a lawful resident of the United States for the past 10 consecutive years.
- Possess a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Successful completion of a thorough background investigation.
- Prior Public Safety Dispatching/Call Taker experience.
- VA Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) Communications Officer Certification.
- VCIN/NCIC Level A Operator
- APCO Telecommunicator I Certification and/or other APCO certifications.
