Director, Small Business Development Center Job at University of San Diego
This is a full-time temporary, benefit-based position. Position is funded by an SBA grant with funding period of no less than three years. Thereafter, position is contingent upon continued grant funding.
This position is responsible for developing, operating, and overseeing the activities of the Brink Small Business Development Center (SBDC). The Brink SBDC is housed in the FEI. Activities support USD Schools, departments, alumni, faculty, staff, students, and the community at large. The Brink SBDC provides assistance to small businesses and aspiring entrepreneurs throughout San Diego and Imperial Counties and is hosted at USD through a cooperative agreement with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) that is managed by Southwestern Community College District's San Diego Imperial SBDC Network Lead Office.
This position works closely with the SDI SBDC Lead Office and network of SBDC Centers to support small businesses by offering free consulting and low cost or free training. This position works with stakeholders and provides liaison with public and private sector business assistance organizations to support economic growth. This position provides leadership and direction, manages clients, advises clients and oversees the coordination of client services, manages resources, abides by reporting standards, and aids in the growth of the Brink SBDC through fundraising and grant development. This position is active in the San Diego business, innovation, and entrepreneurship community.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Manages and oversees all aspects of SBDC operations by:
- Hiring and managing staff and contractors to deliver services and support the functions of the Brink SBDC.
- Managing client intake, assignments, and progress toward key performance indicators.
- Overseeing and coordinating marketing and social media activities.
- Developing programmatic offerings based on needs analysis of existing clients and target clients in San Diego and Imperial Counties.
- Developing and executing continuous improvement and accountability measures to ensure offerings continue to evolve to serve the changing needs of innovation-based businesses.
- Overseeing and strategically using SBDC funding sources including but not limited to grants and restricted funds
- Coordinating with the Assistant Director of the FEI to ensure alignment with University and grant policies as they relate to independent contractors, external agreements, and expenditure policies.
- Overseeing and assisting the Assistant Director of the FEI in completing monthly financial audits to ensure expenses are posted correctly
- Ensuring the timely processing of payment requests, reconciliation of expenses and submission of financial reports
- Creating and managing the budget, approving expenditures, and ensuring reimbursements and overall financial compliance with both SBDC and USD policies.
- This is done to ensure service to innovation-based companies and compliance and performance to the standards outlined in various agreements.
Leads the Brink SBDC's development and fundraising efforts by:
- Actively searching for grants and developing grant proposals to increase the number of clients served and the quality of services provided.
- Working with USD staff to secure additional funds through banks, corporations, organizations, and individual donors.

- This is done to ensure long term financial viability of the program.
Coordinates with the SDI SBDC Network and internal (USD) and external (partner organizations, funders) stakeholders by:
- Working with the SDI SBDC Lead Office to enhance resources and services and abide by SBDC guidelines and the guidelines prescribed by other funders.
- Working with SBDC Center Directors to coordinate services and training offerings.
- Working with the School of Business Finance and Administration team on topics related to finance and human resources
- This is done to ensure good working relationships, grant compliance, and ultimately quality service delivery to innovation-based companies.
Manages reporting requirements and represents USD and the Brink SBDC by:
- Overseeing the reporting of the Brink SBDC's performance programmatically and financially to funders and internal and external stakeholders.
- Coordinate with the School of Business Assistant Dean of Finance and Administration and Grants Accounting in finalizing financial reports as required by grantors
- Cultivating and maintaining relationships within the innovation ecosystem.
- Representing the Brink SBDC and USD with the media as needed.
- This is done to ensure common voice and brand/reputation management.

Job Requirements:Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelors degree in related field from an accredited college or university
- 5 years experience leading innovation and entrepreneurship programs
Preferred Qualifications:
- Education: Masters degree in related field from an accredited college or university
- 5+ years leading innovation and entrepreneurship programs within a higher-education setting.
