JOB DESCRIPTION:

Arlington Public Schools (APS) announces an opening for the position of Director of Professional Learning. This is a twelve-month position, Grade P-16.
DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF WORK
The Director, Professional Learning (DPL) will report directly to the Assistant Superintendent, Human resources. The DPL will lead all aspects of professional learning for Arlington Public Schools. The DPL is tasked with supporting the integration of work between and among offices to align the division’s vision and strategic plan for a comprehensive professional learning aimed at developing an improving organization wherein employees learn and apply the knowledge, skills, and best practices needed to maximize student and work performance. The DPL is tasked with supporting and integrating all professional learning opportunities, ensuring on-going development for all roles in the system, working collaboratively with multiple offices to establish standards and common workflows, design and implement a communication plan, and produce dynamic thought leadership that aligns with the division’s strategic plan. In addition, the DPL will be responsible for collaborating with key departmental leaders and stakeholders to establish and maintain a digital platform to manage the system-wide professional development opportunities for all staff. The DPL will also work closely with the Office of School Support to develop and implement a comprehensive leadership development program for current and aspiring leaders.
The Director, Professional Learning reports to the Assistant Superintendent, Human Resources (supervisor).
RESPONSIBILITIES:

- Support offices in providing professional development aligned with office/departmental needs.
- Utilizes innovative approaches to professional learning for all APS staff.
- Establishes and communicate systems and processes to support the development and implementation of professional learning and support.
- Collaborates on the development and implementation of a digital platform to manage all professional development that supports all roles within the school system.
- Collaborates and coordinates with leaders and stakeholders to develop short and long-term professional learning plans and opportunities to meet the needs of employees across all offices by conducting needs assessments.
- Develops measures and evaluates professional learning opportunities and overall effectiveness related to the division’s strategic plan.
- Provides oversight to the NBCT program, New Teacher Induction (Base Camp), and all staff pre-service week planning.
- Promotes cross-functional collaboration amongst all employees including support staff, teachers, principals, and other administrators to foster organizational alignment and commitment to system-wide goals.
- Communicates and interacts effectively with internal and external business contacts. Speaks in public and engages with stakeholders to broaden the understanding of, promote and advocate for, professional learning opportunities.
- Works in collaboration with the Offices of Talent Acquisition and Management and School Support to garner partnerships with area universities for cohort opportunities based on instructional needs of the school division.
- Collaborates with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to ensure an equity lens is consistently applied to professional learning opportunities.
- Plans, develops, and coordinates employment pathways for support personnel, teachers, administrators, and supervisor for licensed and classified/support staff.
- Plans, develops, and coordinates a mentoring program for beginning teachers, that includes conducting orientation and training for mentors.
- Pans and collaborates with school division school-based administrators to provide support for beginning teachers and newly hired licensed staff at school sites.
- Uses a computer and modern office suite software (such as MS Office), enterprise software and specialized software for planning, scheduling, communicating (email), word processing, manipulating data, preparing presentations, reporting time and attendance, budgeting, requisitioning, researching (the Internet), and performing other functions.
- Typically, operates a motor vehicle to get to/from meetings/events during the school day and after-hours.
- Performs related work, as assigned or on own initiative.
EXPERIENCE:
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Thorough knowledge of APS policies, policy implementation procedures, evaluative requirements set for by the Virginia Department of Education, and system-wide goals. Extensive knowledge of national trends in the delivery of professional learning including use of technology and best practices related to the development and delivery of professional learning both in school systems and in other organizational entities. Knowledge of structures and strategies for effective professional learning; change management; facilitation of high-performing teams; organizational and staff development theories and trends; curriculum and instruction, and assessment programs. Demonstrated experience establishing a digital platform to manage professional development for users with multiple roles. Proven experience developing, standardizing, and implementing professional development for multiple departments. Experience with the development of strategic plans, performance measures, and methods to monitor staff and stakeholder satisfaction. Experience in the development and implementation of career pathways and professional learning partnerships. Excellent oral and written communication, human relations, organization and leadership skills.
QUALIFICATIONS:
MINIMUM EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
1. A Master’s Degree in Education or any other field such as organizational development.
2. Five years of progressively responsible experience in preK-12 teaching and administration and supervision. At least three of these five years of experience must include service as a teacher, an educational specialist or a school administrator.
3. Training and/or experience in educational leadership development.
LICENSE/CERTIFICATION
(1) A Postgraduate Professional License or a Collegiate Professional License issued by the Virginia State Board of Education, and (2) Endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12, are required. (Eligibility for Virginia Licensure/Endorsement through reciprocity may be acceptable.)
