Modern Animal is looking for its first Director of Product Design to join our growing team!

We are looking for a design leader who is passionate about creating an incredible customer experience, helping their team to grow, and influencing via customer insights and design vision. Reporting to the VP of Product, you will join a team of experts in high-growth startups and veterinary medicine, building a modern, technology-enabled veterinary company.

We work in a fast-paced environment and cross-functional groups to design, build, and roll out products that deliver the company's vision and strategy. We are looking for someone passionate about pets and the people who love them, and someone who is excited about rolling up their sleeves to bring our mission to life as we grow!

This role is based in Los Angeles and will require visits our clinics on a regular basis to get close to the customer.

What you'll be working on:

  • Leads design for our entire product suite, including our consumer-facing mobile app and the internal platform used by veterinary professionals and our proprietary electronic medical record system.
  • Gains deep understanding and unique insights for the veterinary professional experience and member experience, and uses the insights to identify product opportunities.
  • Manages and coaches a team of designers to grow in design skills, influence, and advocacy.
  • Works on design directly as needed. This is a player-coach role.
  • Enables our design system to scale.
  • Works closely with product management and engineering to continuously refine the design process and part of the product development process.
  • Defines best practices on user research and be a role model of generating impactful insights via various channels of observation
  • Influences cross-functional partners (engineering, operation, growth, medicine) effectively and drives decision-making

  • 5+ years of experience in a product or experience design role
  • 2+ years of experience managing a team of designers
  • Track record of independently leading projects with company-level impact
  • Track record of helping your team grow in their skills and achieve excellence
  • Track record of influencing product or company direction based on your insights
  • Sweating the details because details matter
  • Feels comfortable rolling up your sleeves to work on design projects
  • Ability to navigate through ambiguity and asking for help when needed
  • Curious and embracing that good ideas come from anywhere
  • Experience building and scaling a cross-platform design system
  • Effective cross-functional communicator by tailoring your language toward different audience
  • Experience working with technology with a heavy operation component is a strong plus.
