Summary/Objective
Responsible for overseeing all orchestra personnel activities of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Inc. including services of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Boston Pops Orchestra, Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra, and Boston Symphony Chamber Players as well as electronic media and touring projects. This includes both Symphony Hall in Boston as well as Tanglewood. Reporting to the Vice President of Orchestra and Production, the Director of Orchestra Personnel oversees the members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, all extra musicians, and the Manager, Orchestra Personnel.
Job Description
Musician Pool Management
  • Determines the need for, and hires, extra and substitute musicians for all BSO activities, including Boston Pops Esplanade Orchestra.
  • Establishes and maintains (with the Music Director, Section Leaders, and Section Representatives) a list of qualified substitute musicians.
  • Works with the Music Director, the Conductor of Pops, and guest conductors to assess the performance of these extra and substitute musicians.
Rehearsal Compliance Management
  • Monitors all rehearsals and concerts, ensuring compliance with the BSO Trade Agreement.
  • Starts, and sometimes stops, each service and ensures that required breaks and time limits are fulfilled.
  • Determines and prepares payroll information for all musicians for all services, including electronic media, ensuring the accuracy of the information both to the Corporation and the Union, including all pension payments made to the Union.
  • Ensures both parties follow the applicable national agreement and the BSO Trade Agreement.
  • Keeps accurate and detailed information for all personnel activity, including absences, vacations, additional payments, and service counts.
Audition Management
  • Supervises auditions for permanent musicians and recruits highly qualified candidates for each vacancy.
  • Plans with the VP, Orchestra and Production when auditions are to be held and supervises all phases of the audition process, ensuring that all auditions comply with the BSO Trade Agreement and national agreements on audition ethics.
  • During the first (probationary) year of a Player's employment, ensures that the required meetings take place in accordance with the BSO Trade Agreement.
  • Assigns vacation weeks for all musicians in compliance with the BSO Trade Agreement and in coordination with repertoire needs.Approves, or disapproves, requests for Personal Leave by Players.Coordinates requests for Optional Leave with the Music Director.Coordinates requests for Sabbatical Leave with the Music Director, CEO, and Artistic Advisory Committee.
  • With the VP of Orchestra and Production, determines casting assignments for the orchestra members and ensures this information is given to the orchestra, Library, and others in a timely manner.
Connector bet. Music Director, Conductor of the Pops, Musicians, Staff, Union.
  • Acts as liaison among the Music Director, the Conductor of the Pops, musicians, staff and the Union, including all rehearsal information, repertoire instrumentation, personnel issues, and individual musician's personal needs.
  • Arranges and attends meetings between Music Director and individual musicians.Represents the Music Director and Conductor of Pops to individual musicians, as directed.
  • Advises Music Director and management to potential personnel issues and identifies possible resolutions.
  • Attends all meetings between management and the Players Committee.
Supporter to Musicians
  • Serves as a "sounding board" to the musicians in both personal and professional issues.
  • Maintains a strong relationship with the Union on the Local and National level.
  • Supervises the Manager, Orchestra Personnel for all rehearsals, concerts, and media activity for the Boston Symphony Chamber Players, including filing the required national contracts with the Union.
Budgeting and Financials
  • Establish and monitor a budget for all BSO, Inc. orchestra personnel activity, including Symphony, Pops, and Tanglewood Seasons.
  • Works with the V.P. Orchestra and Production and the Artistic Administrator to establish musician costs of potential projects.
  • Supervises the Orchestra Personnel Office.
  • Participates on all BSO, BPO, and BPEO national and Foreign Tours and assists with the smooth operation of all services and transportation.
  • Establishes and maintains various rotation plans within the orchestra assuring an equitable distribution of work.
Required Education and Experience
QUALIFICATIONS

  • Experience with national media contracts - their implementation and monitoring.

  • Ability to work well under pressure exhibiting a calm assurance with all constituents while performing at the highest degree of professionalism and clarity.
  • Computer proficiency, including MS Office software.
  • Knowledge of OPAS and Workday is a plus.
  • Genuine interest in the well-being of musicians.
