Job Description/Responsibilities:
Responsible for the development and implementation of log sourcing strategies that deliver competitive advantage for adequate supply and stave mill yielded cost. Sets the strategic direction for log grades, pricing, timber/timberland purchases and inventory optimization. Responsible to maintain, the inventory control system and inventory levels. Directs Log Procurement Managers and other log operations.

  • Identifies skill deficiencies of direct reports and works with each employee to improve one or more skills each year. Works with manager to identify and improve own skill deficiencies assuring personal growth to support the company growth
  • Develops strategy by region for grading and pricing of logs. Continually monitors inventory and practices to ensure log quality delivered to stave mills.
  • Continually seeks means to improve department’s performance as measured against company identified Key Performance Indicators (KPI’S)
  • Monitors and reinforces company safety regulations and policies. Assures that new team members are properly trained to be aware of the dangers in the log yard of loading equipment. Reinforces training periodically to assure compliance. Implements and maintains Behavior Based Safety processes
  • Continually explore ways to improve the log purchasing operation. Provides regular guidance to team members of the importance of their work and efforts to assist the company to improve. Uses PDCA process and A3 documentation for Continuous Improvement.
  • Assures that the log buying work area is always kept free of debris and idle equipment not directly associated with the log purchasing activities. On a daily basis supervises the clean-up of the bark and scrap which accumulates with each delivery of logs.
  • Creates a team environment where all team members are encouraged to strive to contribute to company goals. Develops strategy to maintain consistent relationship with log vendors and logging companies.
  • Continuously work to improve your own skills and those of your team to assure that each team member is improving current skills/ developing new skills at a pace equal to or faster than the company’s growth.
  • Responsible for maintaining and developing inventory control system for organization. Maintains purchasing, transfers and consumption of logs to ensure accuracy of inventory and cost. Works with accounting to verify system accuracy.
Qualifications/Requirements:

Required Qualifications

  • 7 years’ Experience in the logging, sawmill or lumber industry
  • Working knowledge of MS Office Products (Word, Excel and Outlook)
  • Purchasing wood products
  • Strong planning and organizational skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks at one time
  • Strong analytical and technical skills
  • Willingness to travel
  • Demonstrated ability to think strategically

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree
