Director of Institutional Giving Job at Peabody Essex Museum
Over the last 20 years, the Peabody Essex Museum (PEM) has distinguished itself as one of the fastest-growing art museums in North America. Founded in 1799, it is also the country's oldest continuously operating museum. We are seeking an experienced Director of Institutional Giving (Director) who will lead the corporate, foundation and government relations function at PEM. Reporting to the Chief Philanthropy Officer, the Director will secure funding for a range of museum programs, activities, and content areas from corporations, foundations, and government agencies. This individual will manage a portfolio of institutional prospects, and have direct involvement in every stage of the fundraising process. The Director will work closely with curators, key staff leadership, and development colleagues to identify new funding opportunities and potential donors, while maintaining and strengthening relationships with existing institutional donors. The Director will directly supervise the Corporate Relations Officer, and Institutional Giving Coordinator.
Director of Institutional Giving responsibilities include:
Develop a deep understanding of PEM’s diverse exhibitions, collections, and programs, as well as the museum’s strategic goals and financial model, to effectively communicate the case for support and devise strategies for the solicitation of prospects to fulfill fundraising objectives.
Craft strategic goals for the institutional giving team, manage the annual institutional donor pipeline, and track the division’s progress toward achieving annual activity and revenue goals
Strengthen relationships with current institutional donors. Develop and carry out a systematic initiative to identify and target new sources of institutional support.
Direct and manage all foundation and government grant programs, including the oversight of grant applications and proposals.
Work closely with curatorial, education, collections, development and other key staff to identify the museum’s current and future funding needs and opportunities, and persuasively communicate those opportunities for investment to institutional donors as well as recognize and steward foundation, government and corporate donors to secure additional support.
Work closely with the finance team, particularly the Director of Financial Planning and Business Intelligence and the Budget and Grants Officer, to develop grant budgets and reports.
Partner with the individual giving team to cross-pollinate and grow individual and institutional donor relationships to yield greater support by aligning and drawing on both channels.
Develop and maintain systems and reports for tracking the institutional giving pipeline and achieving annual revenue goals and unit activity. Track prospect and donor contacts and moves. Meet specific, mutually agreed-upon goals for monthly contacts and completed solicitations.
Assist in planning cultivation events and other special events for corporate and foundation prospects.
Minimum BA required with an advanced degree and/or specialized training preferred. Seven years of increasingly responsible experience in foundation, government and corporate fundraising, preferably in a museum or education setting. A high level of experience with gift cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship. Experience managing a personal portfolio and a passion for conveying the world of art, art history, and the Museum’s rich cultural history to diverse audiences. The Director should have a proven ability to craft compelling, individualized cultivation and solicitation strategies for institutional prospects in a way that yields continued and increased support. A high level of integrity and the ability to gain trust and respect as well as a good sense of humor. We are looking for a person who possesses and welcomes diverse perspectives and is a true self-starter and team player who works well with all levels of an organization. The Director also demonstrates creativity, problem-solving, and planning skills with both internal and external constituencies. Proficiency in Google Workspace, Microsoft Office and other web-hosted services coupled with exemplary interpersonal, oral, written and presentation and skills.
