BASIC FUNCTION:
Reporting to the Vice President for Student Affairs, the Director of Athletics provides overall supervision, management, leadership, and vision for the Athletics Department. The Director establishes the department's strategic direction in light of Salve's Mercy mission and values. The Director provides leadership, supervision, and motivation for department faculty and staff as they support the needs of the broader athletic community, with an emphasis on education and continuous learning. The Director establishes a vision and quantifiable standards of excellence in intercollegiate athletics, physical education, wellness, and recreation. In addition, the Director develops, implements, and guides department-level policy, as well as administering and managing the department and all its related programs and services. The Director effectively develops and communicates the department's mission, vision, and goals, as well as creates successful plans and proposals for senior administration on behalf of the department and its strategic initiatives, which also reflect the Division of Student Affairs' mission and vision.
The primary responsibility of the Director of Athletics is to oversee all aspects of the athletic programs that are sponsored by the university.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead a full-time staff of six direct reports, including the Associate Director of Media Relations, Associate Director, Assistant Director, Athletic Trainer, Fitness Center Manager and Office & Club Sports Coordinator.
Management
- Be a visible and accessible champion and advocate for scholar athletes, coaching and intramural personnel, and athletics programs.
- Manage and delegate all administrative responsibilities to the department, including staff supervision, development, and evaluation.
- Employ effective hiring and management practices to meet staffing needs and ensure professional excellence.
- Review policies annually and ensure that operational and statistical reports for management and regulatory agencies are completed.
- Encourage, promote, and instill a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion, as well as a high level of cultural competence and respect for a diverse range of identities and experiences within the department to build community.
- Mediate issues and resolve conflict between competing programs and resources.
Intramural and Club Sports
- Provide oversight and advice to club sports, as well as supervision to intramural and club sport coaches, in collaboration with the office of student engagement in terms of club sport finances and training.
- Administer high-quality, innovative, and cost-effective programs to meet our students' diverse needs.
External Relations
- Lead and coordinate all alumni, parent groups, and community/civic organizations, including department representation for event scheduling and public relations to elevate the athletic program.
- Establish, in collaboration with the Alumni Association and Development, the department's proposals and strategic priorities for fundraising, including leadership giving and capital gifts.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for summer camp programs.
Facility Management and Oversight
- Direct the comprehensive scheduling of all athletic facilities, as well as the coordination of a master athletic calendar in conjunction with the master university calendar.
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for athletics and recreational equipment and facilities' maintenance, construction, and restoration, with a purposeful design for safety and future facility needs.
Strategic Planning
Establish and manage the department's vision and strategic direction, with a focus on leading, learning, and recruitment.
Fiscal Responsibility
Show strong leadership of the department's programs and services through budget preparation, administration and management; provide effective and strategic resource management and facility utilization; and administer and monitor the capital, operations, and personnel budgets.
Student-Athlete Recruitment, Retention and Welfare
- Coordinate and manage the strategic recruitment and retention of qualified student-athletes with internal and external partners.
- Ensure the health and safety of student-athletes in collaboration with athletic training staff and college health services.
Campus Community Responsibility
- Consult with student government leaders, student athlete leaders, and student-athletes on a regular basis to ensure that the institution's programs and services meet the needs of the various constituencies, including the leadership and support required for the ongoing development of a wellness, recreation, and alcohol education model.
- Participate in educational programs and take on leadership roles in professional organizations to continue professional development.
Compliance
- Provide primary liaison with the NCAA and various athletic conferences, including voting membership in the NCAA.
- Maintain the institution's relationship with the NCAA, CCC, NEWMAC, and other respective sport conferences to stay abreast of regulatory changes and to ensure compliance with those procedures, rules, and regulations, as well as federal, state, and university guidelines.
- Demonstrate a commitment to Title IX compliance.
OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform other duties as assigned and related responsibilities as necessary.
Job Requirements:
- An advanced degree in physical education, sports management, business or a related field is required.
- Eight to ten years of experience in university or college sports programs or a related field required, five years of which must be in a leadership and supervisory capacity with specific professional contributions to the field. Seven to ten years of progressive experience preferred in a combination of athletic administration, teaching experience in physical education and athletics, coaching, student athlete recruitment, and recreation and lifetime sports.
- Substantial experience in developing and implementing athletics department budgets and a track record of success in working with all financial aspects and management of athletics related facilities and services, including leading change and building a compelling case for what is needed for senior and external audiences.
- Demonstrated success in recruiting, hiring, evaluating, and professionally developing coaches and staff members leading to staff motivation and empowerment in supporting the achievement of excellence in program and service deliverables.
- A collaborative management approach with relationship-building skills, experience building a team, and leading and/or supporting the work of others.
- Highly effective written and oral communication skills with the ability to deliver information in a concise, and articulate manner to multiple stakeholder groups.
- Proven visionary leadership, excellent interpersonal communication across constituency groups, and management skills, particularly as they relate to establishing and communicating priorities, advancing innovative practices, building strategic partnerships, and solving problems.
- Demonstrated ability to link long range visions and concepts to daily work is essential.
- Demonstrated engagement and success in development/fund-raising strategies and efforts with alumni, student-athletes, and their families is essential.
- Demonstrated success in directing women's and men's athletic programs for student athletes is a prerequisite.
- Experience hosting major sports events and championships with an understanding of athletic training requirements and the efficient utilization of personnel is preferred.
- Valid Driver's license required. Current certification in CPR, First-Aid and AED.
