Director of Academic SupportThe Director of Academic Support will be an energetic and engaging individual who can work effectively as a team member as well as with students. Strong interpersonal and communication skills as well as experience working with diverse populations are critical to this position. The director will work to provide academic support to all Mount Union students in a variety of ways as outlined below. A strong candidate for this position will possess a working knowledge of student development theory as well as the current success strategies to meet the academic needs of both undergraduate and graduate students at a private, liberal arts-based university. A demonstrated record of success in implementing new initiatives, strategic planning, and working directly with students is preferred. The director must work effectively with campus partners, including but not limited to faculty and academic departments, the DWOC (Digital, Written, and Oral Communication Studio), the Mathematics Learning Center (MLC), and the athletic department. They will be a member of the Center for Student Success team and will report to the Associate Academic Dean.
EXAMPLE OF DUTIES
Institution-wide responsibilitiesParticipate with other members of the campus community to enhance student learning and promote a campus-wide awareness of and connection to key resources and services for successful transitions. Represent the Center for Student Success and Academic Affairs on institutional or community committees or at institutional programs as requested. Specific responsibilities within the Center for Student Success and for the Office of Academic SupportCreate, and implement cohort-specific academic success programs including, but not limited to: Outreach, support, and programming to improve success and retention among provisionally admitted students, including working closely with the Directors of the Integrative Core and New Student Programs on any mentoring programs for these studentsDirect academic support to undergraduate students returning from suspension or those on good academic standing with warning or academic probationOnline academic success programming for graduate students to be used during their on-boarding processFacilitate cohort-specific academic mentoring programs (i.e., student organizations, athletic groups, international students, etc.)Provide individual success coaching to both undergraduate and graduate students seeking additional academic help or those who are referred to Academic Support for a variety of reasonsLead the planning and implementation of the tutoring and peer mentoring programs Assess the tutoring and learning support needs of Mount Union students to determine efficacy of current programs and to explore the need for additional programsCollaborate with graduate programs to support master’s level and doctoral studentsPartner with athletics to increase student athlete participation in success programs and to develop programmatic elements to help increase student athlete success and retentionAssist with the management of the Starfish retention software, including yearly assessment, four-week progress surveys, and program optimization and planningAssess opportunities to provide workshops and presentations to improve student awareness of campus resources and to assist students in the utilization of these resourcesRecruit, hire, schedule, train, supervise student workers for academic support programsOversee an evaluation program for peer tutors and mentor programs that meet CAS standardsCommunicate regularly with Academic Affairs regarding probationary and re-admitted students, new or changing academic programs, and other academic issuesRepresent the Center and the Office of Academic Support at other programs on campus, including but not limited to Preview, Orientation, Admission events, and student staff trainingAct as a representative to the University committees as needed and complete assigned administrative work and special projects Maintain regular office hours, allowing for walk-in and private appointmentsCollect and report mid-year and annual departmental statistics and contribute to and assist with office/institutional reportsOversee all aspects of the office’s budget, in addition to monitoring and securing current or new grants to support office programsAttend/participate in applicable professional development events and conferences
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
QualificationsA successful candidate will possess: A Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution of higher education and at least two years of leadership experience in the collegiate setting or training that includes teaching or program developmentMaster’s degree preferred in fields of higher education, education, or psychologyExperience facilitating small and large group workshopsExcellent judgement and ability to maintain confidentialityDemonstrated commitment to advancing diversity, inclusion, and equityThe candidate should have excellent interpersonal skills such that they can work collaboratively with students, tutors, course directors, other departmental faculty, and staffThe candidate should be detail-oriented and possess excellent time management skillsFamiliarity with Starfish or other retention software (preferred)
