The Department of Conservation and Recreation seeks qualified applicants for the position of Diesel Power Plant Operator II. Position location is 100 Noonan Place, Somerville, MA.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises, operates, and performs maintenance on diesel engines, pumps and associated equipment used in flood control operation. Performs related work as required.


DETAILED STATEMENT OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Supervises and participates in flood control operations by operating diesel-powered engines and pumps in accordance with checklists and operational manuals, when, at the determination of the Dam and Lock Operator II, Asst. Director, or Director, flood control pumps are needed to maintain river elevation to prevent flooding. Ensures that all safety precautions are observed during engine and pump operations such as the wearing of safety glasses, hearing protection, and protective clothing (i.e., gloves, boots, etc.) to prevent burns, hearing loss, or eye damage. Supervises and participates in emergency maintenance and preventative maintenance of diesel engines and pumps by repairing, replacing, and/or ordering of parts necessary to ensure engine reliability and availability. Supervises and participates in an on-going exercise program of engines and pumps as documented in standard operating procedures to ensure engine reliability and availability. Supervises and participates in periodic maintenance functions such as but not limited to oil changes, filter changes, and engine cleaning. Supervises and participates in inspections of engines, pumps, and related equipment by visual inspection of fuel, air, water, and oil lines; hardware, filters, and etc. for the purpose of ensuring engine reliability and safety. Records on engine run-log sheets and checklist sheets pertinent data such as gauge readings, oil and fuel levels, and related information to ensure adequate supplies and proper operation. Reviews engine log sheets and checklists and provides written reports to supervisor of repairs needed and accomplished, fuel levels, and parts and materiel required for the purpose of maintaining accurate records. Supervises and participates in the housekeeping of the engines, pumps, related equipment, and pump station by wiping, washing, mopping, cleaning, removing snow, picking up trash, etc. to ensure safe engine operation and a safe and clean working environment.


PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Eighteen (18) months experience as a Diesel Power Plant Operator I.
  • A certificate of completion from a recognized school studying maintenance of diesel engines and associated equipment and diesel engine operation may be substituted for one year of experience.
  • Class 3A hoisting license preferred.

Qualifications
First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days.
MINIMUM ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS:
Applicants must have at least two years of full-time or equivalent part-time, experience in the operation and/or maintenance of diesel engines and related auxiliary equipment in a power generating station, treatment plant or pumping station.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: None.
