The Diesel Mechanic performs mechanical diagnosis and repair on the full range of vehicles owned by GoTriangle. They perform the more complex diagnostic, fabrication, repair and overhauling work. This work requires a broad scope and depth of knowledge and skill in a wide variety of functions and subjects, particularly the theory of mechanical and electronic functions.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Diagnosing mechanical bus and specially equipped van problems in the areas of mechanical, pneumatic, HVAC, and hydraulic systems controlled by specialized electronic and computerized systems
  • Repairing problems on virtually any company vehicles including air brakes, transmissions, engines, electronic controls including engine and transmission electronic controls, electronic fare boxes, steering systems, HVAC systems, differentials, 12 and 24 volt electrical systems, electronic head signs, pneumatic lifts, doors, seats, and even windows
  • Fabricating parts such as frames, brackets, braces and linkages from metal; Welds and shapes as needed
  • Recommending whether to rebuild or order a new part based on cost efficiency and service history
  • Repairing simple to complex malfunctions, such as those involving automatic transmissions, electronic controls and computer integrated hydraulic and pneumatic systems
  • Determining task assignments, specific parts to use, and evaluating the work of a helper
  • Responding to road calls. Diagnosing the problem, determining parts and repairs needed, deciding whether to deadline the vehicle, and, if possible, repairing the vehicle at the breakdown site
  • Determining whether a vehicle is unsafe for use and if it needs to be deadlined.
  • Researching vehicle service manuals for information on maintenance and repair
  • Continuously upgrading technical knowledge and skills to stay current on changes that occur each year
  • Updating the vehicle's service records
  • Remaining fully knowledgeable of and maintaining compliance with all Safety rules and regulations
  • Ensuring proper safety tools and equipment are used at all times and reporting Safety hazards and/or violations
  • Performing miscellaneous tasks and other duties as directed

Minimum Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

This position requires a high school diploma or GED along with a good driving record and must have or be able to obtain a Class B Commercial Driver License with a passenger endorsement. The candidate must be able to meet the Department of Transportation physical requirements and maintain a DOT card. Three years of proven diesel powered vehicle experience with strong analytical and diagnostic skills are a requirement. ASE Certifications in Transit Bus or Medium-Heavy Truck preferred. Certificates in Section 609 of the Clean Air Act Amendments of 1990 and performing both Safety and OBD II Emission Inspections in accordance with the State of NC Division of Motor Vehicle Regulations are a requirement. Candidate must have their own tools, proficient in the use of mechanic tools and various shop equipment, prior bus maintenance experience is preferred. Good communication skills and ability to work well with staff, and the outside maintenance providers is necessary along with the ability to report to work during Adverse Weather conditions.
